(Adapted from a design by Ellen Highsmith Silver and published as a free pattern by Marcus Fabrics at www.marcusbrothers.com/makeit/) This neat pincushion takes on great design possibilities when the pieces are cut from a Jinny Beyer border print fabric. Is it a starfish? An octopus? We don’t know, but it does look terrific! One half-yard of border print should make two pincushions, one of each design option, right. Step 1: Make template & cut fabric patches Using see-through template plastic and the pattern below, make a template. Transfer all markings, including dashed sewing lines onto the plastic template using a permanent marker. We provide two design options based on how you place your template on the fabric. Option 1 creates a pinwheel effect; Option 2 creates a mini-kaleidoscope design.

O n io pt 2:
Option 1: Place the template on the fabric, aligning the sewing line under the arrow on a line printed on the fabric. Option 2: Place the template on the fabric, aligning the diagonal mirror line in the center of a mirror-image design motif. (Template will be on point.)
Both Options: Mark around the template and cut out the patch. To make it easy to find identical design motifs for the other patches, trace a portion of the fabric design from the patch onto the template. Find the same design motif elsewhere on the fabric, mark and cut. Repeat to cut eight patches total. On the wrong side of each of the patches, make a small mark to indicate the bottom side.

Step 2: Make & stuff the triangles This square should measure 3½" when printed. Fold each square in half diagonally, right sides together. Stitch A along the bottom of the triangle and up the other side, leaving an opening for turning in the middle of that side. Trim the three corners to reduce bulk. Turn the triangle right-side out, pushing out the corners. Stuff firmly with cotton stuffing. Slip-stitch the opening closed. ld Fo
Step 3: Assemble the pin cushion Stand two triangles side by side with the bottom sides down and the slip-stitched sides upright. Securely stitch the two triangles together at the top (A). Add the remaining triangles one-by-one, stitching it to its neighbor. When all the triangles have been stitched together, sew the bottom triangles together in the same fashion at B. Sew a decorative button with shank to the top of the pincushion. Bottom
