Unit A: Sandwich a 1¾" x 3" folded background strip between two bright 2" squares as shown. Line up the raw edges on the top and right sides of the squares with the fold oriented down. Stitch along the right edge of the sandwich with ¼" seam allowance, then unfold the background strip, and press to make a dimensional triangle. Press back seam open to reduce bulk. Make 2.

Curvy Pincushion Pincushion Top: Sew 2 - 1¼" x 4" strips to opposite sides. Press to the strips and trim strips even with the square. Next sew 2 - 1¼" x 5" strips to the other sides as shown. Press and trim as before. Place this pincushion top on a 4½" batting square and smooth out. The fabric and batting will naturally adhere to each other. 4. One Step quilting and curving the pincushion tops: Curves are achieved by manipulating the folded inserts. All folds are bias folds and can easily be folded back and smoothed into a curved shape, which is then top-stitched to make the curves permanent. Top-stitch the curves as part of the quilting of the pincushion top, using a thread matching the background.
Pincushion Top
HINT: Use your sewing machine needle as a third hand by inserting the needle in the starting point of the fold. First lock your stitches by stitching in place, then pull back the bias fold and fold it back on itself. Smooth out the curve and hold it down while carefully stitching close to its outer edge with a normal straight-stitch. Follow the seam line around the corner and top-stitch the next dimensional triangle until all triangles have been curved and top-stitched. Next follow the diagram and echo stitch around each of the four petals. Start on one long frame strip about 1/4 inch from the seam line as shown and follow the design all the way around, sewing off at the end. Now the top of the pincushion is finished. Cut and square up your pincushion top to measuare 4½" square. 5. Finishing the Pincushion: Place wrong side of backing square on batting square and smooth to make it stay together. Place quilted pincushion top on right side of backing square.

Keep the design square on top. Start stitching on the top right corner, stitch down about 1 inch from the bottom right corner and backstitch, leave about a 1½ inch opening and continue stitching to the next corner about 1" from right bottom corner, pivot and stitch around remaining sides ¼ inches from the remaining three edges.
Clip all corners just to the stitching line, then turn pincushion inside out. Use a blunt long tool like a chopstick, turn each of the corners and smooth out the inside seam line. On the open side, fold in ¼ inch on both layers of the pincushion and press. Starting on the side with the opening, stay-stitch all around the pincushion about ⅛" from the edge, leaving the opening to be stitched up after filling. Fill the pincushion with ground English walnut shells using a funnel, or use any other filler of your choice. Do not overfill the pincushion or it will be hard to stitch closed. Finger press then pin the opening closed and stay-stitch ⅛" from edge. Finally Your pincushion is now ready to use.
