Prewriting: Discovering a genre of focus Your first task is to identify a genre in the community. In a single paragraph, describe 1) your community, 2) your genre as a text, 3) how you will access sample texts from the community’s genre, and 4) why this genre is relevant to this community. Keep the following in mind: -Your genre may be multimodal and include substantial visual elements; however, it must include words. -Choose a genre which you can either observe being composed or used in the community. -Choose a genre to which you can access authentic samples. -Finally, be sure to consider how you can identify “signs, symbols, & sayings” within the community’s genre.
My community is strong, competitive, dedicated, enthusiastic and willing to take risks. It involves physical strength but most importantly mental strength. Only six people are allowed on the court in order to dictate the team’s fate while the rest of the team shows their support. This is only a hint of what the volleyball world is like. However, volleyball belongs to a certain English genre! Volleyball falls under the world of lists. It involves the list of the players, a list of the stats of each player, and a list of wins and loses. Having these lists helps determine the strengths and weaknesses of a team. Many college teams have a website where they keep all these lists. Without this genre coaches would not be able to keep track of the progress the team makes or areas the team needs help with.
