Fall 2016

Issue #27

NASA/BRAZORIA COUNTY ALUMNAE

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT I hope this newsletter finds all my Zeta sisters happy and healthy. As many of you know, we held our planning meeting August 1, 2016 and I am excited to share with you all the great things we have planned this year. We want to continue to grow our chapter and uphold our high standard of service to our community. Last year we contributed to Bay Area Turning Point by collecting baby items, cleaning supplies, and toiletries. In October we helped a family whose home was devastated by a tornado and served the clean-up crew food with help from the Lighthouse Charity Team. We provided study baskets for our Stephen F. Austin sisters. At Christmas we adopted a family and overwhelmed them with Zeta love. January brought a new service in which we involved our legacies and lads and made stuffed animals at Build-A-Bear and then donated them to a local police station for officers to carry in their cars to give to children when they are in difficult situations. February was fun with a painting activity at Escape and Paint. March brought a fun sister activity at Bath Junkie. Then, in April we assembled Easter baskets for the Boys and Girls Harbor of La Porte. We also made gifts for the local university senior Zetas. May was busy with the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and an evening out with our sisters. Finally in June, our annual Bunco game raised money for the ZTA Foundation. As you can see, our chapter focus is on giving back while we have fun. We will continue that standard of philanthropy this year and add even more! Attached you will find the calendar of events for the year. We

would love to see you at one or all the meetings. Our membership is only $35 for an active member. This means you plan to show up to one or all the meetings. We also offer an Associate level for those that cannot attend a meeting, but would still like to remain in good standing with ZTA and aid us with our many service projects. Both membership levels include national dues and 2nd Century Birthday Dollars. SO, if you’ve never been to a meeting or joined an alumnae group; I know how you feel! I was the same way for 15 years! I took the leap three years ago and I can guarantee that you will have fun, enjoy a night out each month, rebuild or build new Zeta relationships, and remember why you became a Zeta in the first place all while serving our community. Our first meeting of the year will be at Calvin and Joseph’s Spa & Wine Bar on September 12th starting at 7:00 PM. We will be collecting school supplies for the Friendswood Junior High Mustang Care Committee. I would love to shake your hand and welcome you to the best little ZTA Alumnae chapter in all of Houston!

ZLAM, Brooke Newell President

The Many Colors of ZTA We had another outstanding year celebrating “The Many Colors of ZTA”. Meetings this year ranged from our annual bunco fundraiser, to building bears for the local police department to deliver to kids in need, to wine tasting.

News to Share Jillian Ginn married Brandon Stewart on March 19th, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Pasadena, TX. The wedding reception was held at the Galveston Railroad Museum. After a honeymoon cruise to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Montego Bay, the couple moved into their first house in Cypress, TX.

Angela Malone Kelly is the chair of Houston Alumnae Association’s 13th Annual Think Pink luncheon on Oct. 5, 2016. This year’s theme is Paint the Town Pink. If you are interested in buying a table, donating to the cause, or volunteering go to the website thinkpinkhouston.org or talk with Angela. Thank you to Tish Wright, Ellen Armistead, Cheri Armstrong, Leila Ravandi, and Rhonda Robinson for their hard work and commitment to the annual collegiate sorority recruitment. Each year our chapter receives approximately 150 packets from young ladies who have registered with Clear Lake Panhellenic for recruitment. This takes a lot of time to prepare the recommendations for each young lady. The time and effort these ladies give is reflected in the successful recruitment for ZTA each year. Wendy Glaze is moving (a few neighborhoods)! Wendy and her husband just purchased a house in Bay Oaks. We are so excited for them!

Pictured: Jillian and Brandon Stewart. Cheri White Armstrong’s son Austin graduated from Texas A&M in December with an Industrial and Systems Engineering degree and works for PepsiCo in Houston. At the ZTA national level, Cheri White Armstrong starts her second year of service as the District President of XI-G. Angela Malone Kelly starts her third year of service as part of the Chapter Financial Management Committee (CFMC). Mandy Pierce Scott continues her many years of service as part of the Efficiency Committee for Convention. Sky Lyn Williams Gibbons opened a new restaurant in the Friendswood area in July. The restaurant is called Brasserie 1895 and is a chef-driven restaurant serving Old Worldinspired wood fired cuisine. Support a local Zeta and stop by and dine in! Tish Torres Wright was named the co-chair for Clear Lake Panhellenic sorority recruitment!

Karen Malkey’s son is a cook-off team champion! Karen says “I’m very proud of my son Michael Robertson for his love to cook.” He has a cooking team full of great friends from Texas A&M who enjoying entering cook-offs. One of his recent victories was at the 20th Annual Yaga Wild Game cookoff, where his team placed 1st and 2nd in the rib category. They even made the news!
