NetworkingTips Build connections with future mentors and colleagues. Step 1: Relax! • The representatives you will meet were once in your shoes. They want to get to know you better, your interests, and experiences.

Step 2: Introduce Yourself • When you meet someone smile, shake their hand, look them in the eye and introduce yourself. • Establish a personal rapport – look for a common interest like college sports, the Manhattan community, clubs, common faculty as teachers, etc.

Step 3: Ask Questions • Listen carefully to their answers and follow-up with questions. Use this as an opportunity to get advice from someone who is where you hope to be someday.

Sample Questions: – “Are you a K-State grad? What was your major?”

– “How did you choose a career path?”

– “What was the more rewarding part of your college experience?”

– “How did you determine what type of internships and jobs to apply for?”

– “What made you choose [company name]?”

– “What do you enjoy most about what you do?”

Step 4: Follow Up Use a professional e-mail address

Proper introduction of yourself and reason for e-mail, including clear details and what you’re requesting Include e-mail signature

– “What do you find most challenging in your current job?”

I want to let you know how much I appreciate the time you spent sharing your experience as a young professional. I learned a great deal about your company and also value the advice you gave me on how to go about my internship search. I’ve attached my current resume. Would you be willing to provide me with feedback on how I might improve it?   Express gratefulness Thank you, again,  Sam for assistance --Parts of a Professional E-mail Signature Sam Wildcat Vice President of Alpha Kappa Psi • First and Last Name Sophomore in Accounting • Leadership Role(s) [email protected]
