BCAC MPASS Weekly News for Residents on the Go

The Great American Eclipse talk draws large crowd Millions of people will stop what they are doing on August 21st to view a total eclipse of the Sun. A wondrous spectacle when the moon completely blocks the sun and day becomes night. Dr. Henry Nebel, a resident and self-proclaimed “eclipse enthusiast,” shared his love of all things cosmic with over 65 fellow residents at the Harbour Pointe Clubhouse on Sunday afternoon. With young volunteers from the audience, he demonstrated what exactly happens during a solar eclipse. Dr. Nebel, a newly retired University of Richmond Physics professor, kept the attention of his audience with stories of his “around the world eclipse” experiences. He gave instructions on how to safely view the eclipse and distributed viewing glasses. His best advice was to avoid getting wrapped-up in photographing the eclipse and just look and enjoy the experience.

Marshmallow Kisses in Harbour Pointe Park

Doggie Paddle & Play

On Tuesday morning moms, grandparents and caregivers met at Harbour Pointe Playground for a story, game, snack and take-home activity and treat. The story this month was Marshmallow Kisses written by Linda Crotta Brennan and illustrated by Mari Takabayashi. The storyline details a summertime of experiences not to be missed if one takes the time to notice. These experiences include sleeping with an open window and the ceiling fan circling the room with cooler air, walking barefoot in tickly grass, eating fresh buttered corn and snap beans from the garden or swinging on a porch swing. The story ends during an evening cookout with

the neighbors and children roasting marshmallows. Marshmallow kisses are exchanged and happy sleepy children are tucked in their beds. Following storytime, children were provided a snack to stave off growling tummies while moms had a chance to chat with one another. The playground was in full swing with lots of excitement until the rain came. Each family went home with the ingredients for microwavable S’mores and an activity sheet. Families can complete all 17 Summertime Activities and bring the activity checklist back in September for a prize. Storytime is a free BCA-sponsored event held in a different neighborhood playground each month. Next month, storytime will be held at Sunday Park Playground on Wednesday, September 13, 10:30 a.m. To attend, register with [email protected]

Release the hounds! It’s that time of year when the BCA opens a pool to our resident pups for swim & play time. All dogs should be dog (and people) friendly, be fully vaccinated and leashed in the parking lot and outside facility areas. This year Pastor Jim Dunkin from the Brandermill Church will perform the “Blessing of the Animals” at 6:30 p.m. for those who wish to participate. No reservations are necessary for this free family-friendly event. Bring your camera to capture some truly priceless memories. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of pet and human friends, the following event rules apply. • All dogs must be well-behaved. • Dogs may not go on the slide. • Dogs must be leashed at all times in the parking lot and outside the event area. • Owners are responsible for picking up after their dogs

Reminder: The BCA office will be closed Tuesday, Lion’s Club August 22, 11a.m. - noon for staff training.

7th Annual Crab Fest Saturday, September 16, 3-7 p.m. Brandermill Church

Eat your fill of Chesapeake Blue Crabs and more at the 7th Annual Crab Fest. A fund-raiser for the BMW Lions Club and held at the Brandermill Church. Tickets are $30 per person. The menu includes: Chesapeake #1 Blue Crabs, Jambalaya, Corn on the Cob, Corn Muffin and a choice of Iced Tea or Lemonade. Visit www.bmw-lions.org or call 804-292-5878 for more information.

It’s worth a try The Canada Goose population in Brandermill has created some aesthetic headaches, especially, on our docks. These large birds can ravage grass and leave up to a pound (per bird) of droppings a day, staining and deteriorating the wood. Birds are stubborn, and want to stay where they are happy and comfortable. Since these geese are a protected species (we know this from the nest in St. Ledger’s pool this past spring) there are few options. Repurposed July 4th pinwheels to the rescue! BCA staff is trying a new trick by positioning pinwheels along the docks in hopes this may deter the birds. Staff has installed them along the Harbour Pointe dock to test this theory. Stay tuned for updates.

BCA website update Staff and the Communications & Marketing Committee have been hard at work all summer fine-tuning the anticipated new website. In order to test that signing in to the “password protected side” of the website is easy for all, we have identified a focus group to test and provide staff with feedback. Residents will be able to pay their HOA dues online along with many other helpful features. Keep your eyes on your mailbox for a mid-September mailing about the launch!
