CAA BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Logan McRae, College of Charleston
So., 1B/OF, Florence, S.C./West Florence McRae batted .778 (7-for-9) with two homers, six runs scored and nine RBI’s as College of Charleston won two-of-three at SEC foe Georgia last weekend. The sophomore went 4-for-4, scored three times and drove in three in Friday’s 9-3 victory over the Bulldogs, contributed a homer and three RBI’s in Saturday’s 15-6 triumph and was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI’s in a narrow 9-8 loss on Sunday. McRae finished the weekend with a .769 on base percentage and 1.556 slugging percentage.
CAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Robbie Welhaf, Elon
Jr., RHP, Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East Welhaf threw the first no-hitter in Elon’s Division I history last Saturday as Elon blanked Longwood, 7-0. The junior right-hander, who was making his third career start, faced just one hitter over the minimum and retired 16 consecutive batters at one point. Welhaf finished with eight strikeouts and only one walk over the nine innings.
CAA BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Brandon Raquet, William & Mary
Fr., OF, Boalsburg, Pa./State College Raquet batted .333 (4-for-12) with a homer, three runs scored and two RBI’s in his collegiate debut at No. 2 ranked Florida. The freshman outfielder had at least one hit in all three games, including going 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI’s as the Tribe dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to the Gators in Friday’s opener.

BASEBALL • February 21, 2017 DIAMOND NOTES: COL. OF CHARLESTON (2-1) The Cougars got off to an impressive start, winning two-of-three over SEC foe Georgia. CofC batted .310 in the series, averaged 9.7 runs and had 12 extrabase hits. Logan McRae led the attack by batting .778 (7-9) with two homers and nine RBI’s, while Tommy Richter hit .500 and scored five times. On the mound, Bailey Ober got the win in the opener after limiting the Bullogs to two runs on four hits over 6.2 innings while fanning eight. Carter Love started on Saturday and held UGA to one run on four hits over 4.1 frames. The Cougars made just one error over the first three contests. CofC visits defending national champion Coastal Carolina on Wednesday. DELAWARE (0-4) The Blue Hens went 0-4 last week, dropping games to Ohio State, Kansas State and Pitt. Jeremy Ake batted a team-best .417 (5-12) with two RBI’s and Doug Trimble hit .375 with a pair of doubles. Jordan Glover belted a grand slam and finished with five RBI’s against Ohio State. Kevin Mohollen reached base in all four games. On the mound, left-hander Kevin Milley limited Pitt to just one run on five hits over 7.0 innings while striking out five, but didn’t get a decision in UD’s 3-2 loss. The Blue Hens play in Old Dominion’s tournament this weekend against ODU, Saint Joseph’s and Kentucky. ELON (2-1) The Phoenix opened the season by taking two-of-three from Longwood, winning 10-5 and 7-0 before dropping the finale, 9-5. Junior Robbie Welhaf threw the first no-hitter in Elon’s Division I history on Saturday as he faced just one batter over the minimum and struck out eight over 9.0 innings. The effort earned him National Player of the Week honors from Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA. Offensively, Kyle Jackson batted .500 (5-10) in the series with a pair of doubles and four RBI’s. Freshman Cam Devanney hit .400 and scored four times in his collegiate debut. Elon stole 10 bases in the Longwood series after swiping just 37 all of last season. The Phoenix visit #12 Clemson for a 3-game series this weekend. HOFSTRA (0-3) The Pride went 0-3 at the Tanji Tourism Baseball Classic in Louisiana, falling to Murray State (5-1), No. 36 Southeastern Louisiana (11-1) and No. 13 Louisiana Lafayette (1-0). Starter Teddy Cillis limited ULL to one run and fanned six over 5.0 innings and Andrew Mundy followed with 3.0 shutout frames. Both Hofstra runs in the tournament came on solo homers by Nick Bottari and Vinnie Costello. Steven Foster added a pair of doubles. Hofstra meets No. 3 LSU on Wednesday before meeting Nicholls, Southern and Grambling in a tournament. JAMES MADISON (2-1) The Dukes went 2-1 in South Carolina, highlighted by an 11-3 victory over defending national champ Coastal Carolina on Sunday. It was the first win over a Top 10 team for JMU since 2007. Junior Adam Sisk smacked a pair of threerun homers against the Chanticleers, which was the first two-homer game by a JMU player since 2015. Sisk batted .545 with three homers and eight RBI’s for the weekend. Mike Sciorra hit .600 with four walks and three runs scored. JMU beat North Carolina A&T, 5-1, in Friday’s opener as pitcher Brandon Withers gave up three hits over 5.0 shutout innings and struck out six.

BASEBALL • February 21, 2017 UNCW (3-0) The No. 23 Seahawks swept their own Hughes Bros. Challenge, defeating George Mason, VMI and Appalachian State. Senior Casey Golden led the UNCW offense, batting .500 (6-12) with two homers, a double and four RBI’s. He knocked home the winning run against ASU and collected three hits and three RBI’s vs. Mason. All-American Brian Mims hit .455 (5-11) and drove in three as the Seahawks batted .310 as a team. Robbie Thorburn extended his hitting streak to 14 games. On the mound, Austin Warren threw 3.0 innings of shutout relief to earn the win vs. VMI, while Austin Magestro fired 2.2 shutout innings against Mason to pick up his first save of the year. UNCW travels to Ole Miss for a three-game series this weekend. NORTHEASTERN (0-3) The Huskies dropped three games in their season-opening series at Southern Miss. NU jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third on Sunday, but fell 8-7. Senior Nick Fanneron batted .750 with two homers and four RBI’s in the series. Mason Koppens hit .455 (5-11), while Charlie McConnell batted .364. Freshman Scott Holzwasser reached base seven times in the series, including all four times in his debut on Friday. He scored a team-high three runs. NU travels to North Florida for a four-game series this weekend. TOWSON (0-0) The Tigers head West to open their season this weekend, traveling to Cal State Northridge for a four-game series. Back to lead the Tigers is sophomore shortstop Richie Palacios, who earned CAA Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-America honors in 2016 after batting .329 with six doubles, five triples, five homers, 38 RBI’s and 55 runs scored. He set a school freshman record with 74 hits and stole a school-record 32 bases. Back on the mound is Kyle Stricker, who was 6-2 with a 3.86 ERA a year ago. WILLIAM & MARY (0-3) The Tribe suffered three losses at No. 2 Florida to start the year. W&M led the Gators 4-3 after six in Friday’s opener before falling 5-4. Cullen Large paced the W&M offense, hitting .364 (4-11) with a double, triple, three runs scored and three RBI’s, while freshman Brandon Raquet batted .333 and scored three times. The Tribe batted only .188 as a team. On the mound, Nick Brown gave up three runs over 5.0 innings and fanned four in Friday’s close loss. The Tribe opens the home portion of their schedule this weekend, hosting Lafayette in a three-game series.
