LAMAR GAME NOTES Lamar sweeps past Abilene Christian After falling in seven of its first nine conference games, Lamar got back on track this past weekend, gutting out a pair of tight ballgames at Abilene Christian before exploding for 16 runs on the getaway day. It marked the first Southland series victory of the season and the first LU sweep since taking home a four-game set vs. LIU Brooklyn in February.

Ill., native finished the week hitting .700 and slugging 1.400 over a four-game stretch to earn national recognition from both NCAA.com and Louisville Slugger. He was also the first Card of the season to earn Southland Hitter of the Week.
Bumpers breaks slump Preseason All-Southland selection Sam Bumpers wasn’t looking like one of the best offensive performers in the league through the first part of the 2014 season. The senior shortstop was hitting a paltry .206 heading into the Southeastern Louisiana series. However, Bumpers would go 4-for-6 in that first game vs. the Lions, and ever since, he’s hit .465 with four doubles, four homers, 15 scores and 10 runs batted in. He’s also posted team-best totals in slugging (.691) and on-base percentage (.500) over that time, and enters the weekend riding a 17-game hitting streak. Close Encounters of the Bird Kind The Cards have made nail-biters a regular occurence this season, which was certainly on display this past weekend as the first two games of the series were decided by a total of three runs. LU’s played 20 games decided by two runs or less, which ranks among the nation’s leaders. The tying run has walked to the plate in the ninth inning in 20 games this year, and the outcome has been decided in extra innings five times.

LAMAR GAME NOTES Early bird gets the win Despite the number of close games, LU’s success has been generally dictated by the opening two innings. The Cards are 8-1 when taking a lead in the first frame and 10-2 with a lead after two innings.

Circle of Friendswood When senior Andrew Beasley stepped foot on campus a few years back, it’s hard to imagine that he’d expect to be surrounded by so many fellow Friendswood High School graduates. The trend has picked up over the past two years as Friday night starter Will Hibbs as well as regular first baseman Tyler Sullivan both hail from the school. Pitchers Jayson McKinley and Brent Janak have also been significant contributors out of the bullpen. Houston, we do not have a problem For the second consecutive season, Lamar handed a ranked Houston team a midweek loss with a 4-2 decision at Cougar Field on March 18. Seven Cards picked up hits in the game, and five pitchers saw time on the mound without surrendering a run. It marked the first home loss for the 15-4 and 21st-ranked hosts and it comes just a year after the Cards beat the then-No. 19 Cougars at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

2014 CARDINAL BASEBALL
Power surge After not homering in the first 16 games of the season, the Cardinals have picked up a bit of power in the last 17, homering nine times. Jacoby Middleton hit the first of the season on March 9 vs. Harvard, and then Wayne Stanley followed up three days later with another vs. Prairie View A&M. Both Brandon Provost and Kevin Santana left the ballpark vs. Southeastern on March 19, and then Sam Bumpers put on a show on March 28, homering four times over two games against McNeese State. Kyle Markum also picked up his first career homer vs. the Cowboys on that day. All but two of the long balls have been launched from the notoriously pitcher-friendly Vincent-Beck Stadium.

LAMAR GAME NOTES Cards picked second and sixth The LU baseball team was to finish second in the annual Southland preseason coaches poll, earning one first place vote. The sports information directors of the league were decidedly cooler to the idea, picking LU to finish sixth. Sam Houston State was once again the favorite as they pursue a third consecutive league title. All-Timers This past summer, the Southland recognized all-decade teams for each of the league’s 50 years in existence, and Lamar ended up the big winner in the process, as Jim Gilligan was named to the list for the 1960s as a player and then earned coach of the decade for the 1970s, 1980s and 2000s. In all, a league-best 35 players were selected to the teams, including 11 in the 2000s, six in the 1980s, 11 in the 1970s and six in the 1960s. None were selected to the 1990s team, as LU competed in the American South and Sun Belt Conference at the time. #PeckEm Fans and media are encouraged to follow along with @LamarCards on Twitter.
