LAMAR GAME NOTES Midweek Mastery The trio of Sam Bumpers, Jacoby Middleton and Brandon Provost have been the engines of the LU offense in its four midweek games this season. Provost leads all hitters with a .417 average and five runs batted in. Middleton has scored six times with a .308 average, and Bumpers has supplied the bulk of the power, hitting .294 with three doubles. The Cards are 2-2 in midweek games this season, falling to Texas Southern at home and Baylor on the road. However, the wins include an 18-6 seven-inning decision over Prairie View A&M and a 4-2 road victory at then-No. 21 Houston. Close Encounters of the Bird Kind The Cards have made nail-biters a regular occurence this season, which was certainly on display this past weekend as the three Nicholls games were decided by a grand total of eight runs. LU’s played 14 games decided by two runs or less, which ranks as the sixth-most in the country in the category. The tying run has walked to the plate in the ninth inning in 15 games this year, and the outcome has been decided in extra innings three times. Early bird gets the win Despite the number of close games, LU’s success has been generally dictated by the opening two innings. The Cards are 6-0 when taking a lead in the first frame and 8-1 with a lead after two innings.

LAMAR GAME NOTES
PROJECTED STARTER
Houston, we do not have a problem For the second consecutive season, Lamar handed a ranked Houston team a midweek loss with a 4-2 decision at Cougar Field on March 18. Seven Cards picked up hits in the game, and five pitchers saw time on the mound without surrendering a run. It marked the first home loss for the 15-4 and 21st-ranked hosts and it comes just a year after the Cards beat the then-No. 19 Cougars at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
WEDNESDAY LHP David Carver Senior 6-foot-4, 180 lbs. Reseda, Calif. Pierce College
u David Carver is set to make his third start of the season and fourth overall appearance on Wednesday. u Made first start of the season at Baylor, pitching a pair of scoreless innings and allowing a walk while striking out two. u Tossed three innings in start over Harvard, giving up a solo home run. u Surrendered a run in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen two weekends ago at Southeastern Louisiana. u Was a regular starter a year ago, making 12 starts with a 5-3 record and 5.74 ERA over 58 innings of work. u Made first career start last season in a 6-1 win vs. Washington, tossing a complete game four-hitter .
Santana’s Supernatural start After putting together a stellar sophomore campaign with Blinn College, a lot was expected this season out of junior outfielder Kevin Santana. So far, the Cypress native has delivered. A .337 hitter, Santana has hit safely in all but three games this season and registered multiple hits in 11. He’s also doubled 11 times, which was the seventh-best total in the nation at the start of the week. There must be an Angelle among us Chase Angelle was second in appearances last season for the Lamar pitching staff, and he’s once again asserted himself in 2014. The junior out of Orange has made six starts this season, going at least six innings in each and allowing three or fewer runs each time. He is one of 17 pitchers in the country with six quality starts in as many opportunities this season. Power surge After not homering in the first 16 games of the season, the Cardinals have picked up a bit of power in the past few weeks, as four balls have left the park. It started with a Jacoby Middleton threerun shot vs. Harvard on March 9, and then Wayne Stanley followed up with a three-run blast of his own a few days later against Prairie View A&M. Brandon Provost and Kevin Santana left the park in the Southland opener at Southeastern Louisiana. New Adventures of Old Vidrine Jude Vidrine is the lone remnant of the 2010 Southland Tournament-winning team. The Nederland native redshirted that season, and as a senior, he’s continuing to make a name for himself. Vidrine scored more runs and walked more last season than any other returning player in the Southland, and he’s continued that form into this years campaign, touching home a team-best 22 times in 25 games. He’s also knocked in 15 runs this year to go along with a .269 batting average and a league-best 21 walks, which brings his on-base mark to .409. A regular in centerfield this season, he enters Wednesday with 119 consecutive starts, which is the 26th-best active streak in the country.

LAMAR GAME NOTES Cards picked second and sixth The LU baseball team was to finish second in the annual Southland preseason coaches poll, earning one first place vote. The sports information directors of the league were decidedly cooler to the idea, picking LU to finish sixth. Sam Houston State was once again the favorite as they pursue a third consecutive league title. All-Timers This past summer, the Southland recognized all-decade teams for each of the league’s 50 years in existence, and Lamar ended up the big winner in the process, as Jim Gilligan was named to the list for the 1960s as a player and then earned coach of the decade for the 1970s, 1980s and 2000s. In all, a league-best 35 players were selected to the teams, including 11 in the 2000s, six in the 1980s, 11 in the 1970s and six in the 1960s. None were selected to the 1990s team, as LU competed in the American South and Sun Belt Conference at the time. #PeckEm Fans and media are encouraged to follow along with @LamarCards on Twitter.
