Catholic Education Gets Set for Year 7 Move From 2015 Year 7 will become part of Catholic secondary schools across Queensland A Message from the Director In 2015, Year 7 will become part of the secondary setting in all school sectors throughout Queensland. The move will be a significant change for both Catholic primary and secondary schools. We believe it is the right decision if Queensland is to maintain a world class education system. Since the introduction of Prep, students will be an average of six months older when they reach Year 7 and we believe ready for the challenges of the specialist teaching programs the secondary school setting provides. Importantly, the move will more closely align our school structures with the delivery of the new Australian curriculum that is now being implemented, and with the other states. Catholic education is working with principals and school communities along with the state government to ensure this major reform is successfully delivered with the interests of students, teachers, staff and their families paramount. I am confident that, as with the roll-out of Prep in recent years, Catholic education will successfully deliver this significant reform to our education system. Dr Cathy Day - Director
Working in Partnership with Families and Schools With the move of Year 7 to secondary taking place in 2015, families have a firm timeframe to clarify secondary options for their children. We are working with schools to ensure teachers and staff are well catered for and that any teachers required in secondary schools are well prepared to teach Year 7 in the secondary school context. We are working collaboratively with schools (especially the boarding colleges) to implement pastoral plans to ensure a smooth transition for students starting Year 7 in the secondary environment. All matters associated with the staffing of schools will be carefully considered in consultation with teachers and other staff, and in keeping with appropriate industrial processes.
Enrolment for Years 7 and 8 in 2015 The Enrolment Process Year 7 and 8 in 2015
“Students will be an average of six months older when they reach Year 7 and we believe ready for the challenges of secondary school.” - Townsville Catholic Education Director, Dr Cathy Day
In 2015, we will have two new groups of students enrolled in secondary. If your child is currently in Year 5 or 6, they will be due to start Years 7 or 8 as part of secondary in 2015. Enrolments for both Year 7 and 8 will be processed from late 2013. Children who attend a Catholic primary school are guaranteed a place at a systemic Catholic secondary college*, provided applications are received by the set due date. Children who are currently in Year 5 or 6 in a Prep-12 college will follow regular continuing enrolment processes.
Townsville Catholic Education will advertise in local and regional newspapers in Term 3 and 4 in 2013 to advise parents of the enrolment dates for Yeas 7 and 8 for 2015. This information will also be available on the Townsville Catholic Education website www.tsv.catholic.edu.au or facebook page www.facebook/TownsvilleCEO Enrolment interviews and first offers will begin in Term 2 of 2014. Enrolments are welcomed throughout the year; however this will depend on availability of places. Enrolment application forms will be available from each college. Check with your preferred Catholic secondary college for further information. Catholic schools are open to all who seek a Catholic education and who are supportive of the Christian faith and values. Places in Catholic schools are in high demand. Therefore parents/carers are advised to submit enrolment application forms by the due date to ensure the best possible chance of securing a place at your preferred Catholic college. Families with more than one child in the same Catholic school receive discounted fees. Healthcare and Pensioner card holders are also eligible for fee assistance – contact the principal for further information.
