Manhattan Top Agent Cathy Taub grew up learning about real estate from her mother, then one of New Jersey’s most successful agents. “She was an amazing role model,” Cathy says. “Extremely hard-working, service-oriented and smart, my mother was one of the very few working moms at the time and she was inspiring! Still, I never thought I’d pursue real estate as a career.” Instead, Cathy pursued a law career that included practicing at a top Wall Street law firm and two Fortune 100 companies. Soon after her second child was born, however, Cathy realized that an attorney’s schedule didn’t offer the flexibility she wanted. “My mom strongly suggested I consider a career in real estate brokerage and this time I took it to heart,” Cathy says. “I realized quickly that it suited my personality and skill set. I also loved not being tied to a desk.”
Now a broker for more than 14 years, Cathy works with buyers and sellers throughout Manhattan, with a concentration in the luxury residential market. “I was fortunate to get into real estate when the market was on the rise,” she says. “I started out with a great list of contacts from my years of law practice, years spent building trust with clients, and I immediately began doing business in the high end.”
There is no doubt that Cathy’s extensive legal background is a unique advantage in the high stakes environment of the Manhattan market. “My years of law practice have proved invaluable to navigating real estate transactions, being a strong advocate for my sellers and buyers and knowing that every deal presents different nuances and potential challenges. I never feel daunted by the inevitable issues that arise,” she says. In fact, “the ever-changing landscape that defines Manhattan real estate brokerage insures that my work is never boring — I welcome the challenges. As the broker, it’s my job to maintain stability and calm and add value to the deal.” Cathy also cites her negotiation skills as another point of difference. “I am always optimistic that a deal can be made even when differences are pronounced, so long as the buyer and seller are serious about getting the deal done,” she explains. “I am skilled at working with the various parties involved in a transaction: from the
attorneys who are an important part of the process in Manhattan, to mortgage brokers, bankers, buyers, sellers and co-brokers, I understand that communication is essential to keeping deals on track and intercepting and solving problems early on. I believe in being proactive, not just reactive.”
Honesty, integrity, and a true desire to see her clients happy are the driving forces behind Cathy’s business. “My clients view me as a trusted advisor,” she says. “I am knowledgeable about the market, smart and extremely service-oriented. I will do almost anything to make sellers and buyers happy — within reason of course,” she adds with a laugh.
With her client-centered approach, it’s no surprise Cathy has been recognized with a number of industry awards. She has been honored as Dealmaker of the Year, and consistently ranks among Manhattan’s Top Agents. In 2014, The Real Deal named Cathy as the #9 Top Listing Agent in Manhattan. She is also regularly included on the Wall Street Journal’s list of Top Agents. Additionally, she is a regular panelist at events hosted by industry veterans, including, among others, the Real Estate Board of New York. Yet for Cathy the most rewarding aspect of being a broker comes directly from her clients, many of whom become friends in the process. “It’s gratifying when I’m told after closing how happy my clients are that they worked with me,” she says. “There are a lot of agents in Manhattan, so it makes me feel great that I have a thriving business that consists overwhelmingly of referrals.”
Looking to the future of her business, Cathy sees exciting opportunities for growth. “I am committed to engaging more deeply in marketing through social media,” she says. “I am always looking for novel approaches to marketing and improving my business.”
