CCEDC November, 2013 Blog Post Upcoming/Ongoing Events: 

1-Day Workshop on Habitat Assessment Guidelines: Saturday, November 2, 2013: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Ulster County Cornell Cooperative Extension office, Kingston, NY. If you'd like to learn how to design and implement Habitat Assessment Guidelines in your town or municipality, please consider attending this free one-day Hudsonia workshop. Participants will receive sample Guidelines that can be adapted to the needs of their communities. The course is especially designed for members of town boards, planning boards, conservation commissions, and other municipal representatives directly involved in environmental reviews, land use policy-making, and planning. Registration required. To help fulfill training requirements for planning board members, self-certification forms will be provided for the workshop. Credit will be awarded at the discretion of each municipality. Registration: Please register with Hudsonia to be considered for enrollment in the course. The workshop is free. CCE Seminar: How Forests and Wetlands Reduce Flood Risks: Thursday, November 7, 2013: 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Desmond Fish Library, 472 New York 403, Garrison, NY. This seminar will explore the role that natural habitats-especially forests and wetlands-play in flood mitigation. Marilyn Wyman, CCE Columbia Greene Counties, will discuss how forests absorb excess precipitation and help to stabilize stream banks. Laura Heady, NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program, will share information about the role of wetlands in maintaining clean water, controlling floodwaters and protecting shorelines from erosion and property damage. CCE Seminar: Determining Peak Flow Under Different Scenarios and Identifying Undersized Culverts: Monday, December 2, 2013: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Woodbury Fire Department, 455 Route 32, Highland Mills, NY. Presented by: Dr. M. Todd Walter, Biological & Environmental Engineering, Cornell University & Andrew Meyer, NYS DEC Hudson River Estuary Program. Changes in land use and precipitation patterns are leading to culverts that are too small to pass the amount of flow some streams are seeing during large storms. A collaboration between the NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program, Cornell University, Orange County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Lower Hudson Coalition of Conservation Districts, this project is identifying culverts that might be

Hudson River Estuary Program: “Trees for Tribs”: Now accepting applications for October and early November plantings. This program provides native tree and shrub species and assistance for sites along streams in the Hudson River estuary watershed; sites must qualify. Water Quality Improvement Projects (WQIP) Grant Program: This program backs projects that improve water quality and decrease polluted runoff, as well as reestablish habitat in New York’s waterbodies. The program is largely funded by the Environmental Protection Fund and NY Works II. The application deadline is Friday, December 13, 2013. Urban Forestry Grant Program: Under this program, grants ranging from $2,500 to $50,000 will be awarded to municipalities for urban forestry projects that will be used to enhance landscapes and provide green spaces in urban areas. Applications are due Thursday, December 5, 2013 by 4:00 p.m.

Environmental Notice Bulletins for Dutchess County: Environmental Notice Bulletins include SEQR and related notices, SPDES renewals, and completed DEC applications, as well as other pertinent environmental notices for the county of Dutchess. SPDES (State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) receives applications to renew permits for SPDES. Under SPDES, the NYS DEC can control wastewater and stormwater discharges in compliance with the Clean Water Act.
