CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURE DESIGN AND EDUCATION Traditionally, a school was where students learned privately, essentially separated from the community. In our concept, it is the gathering spaces that connect learning and community functions. Schools can become a space where students learn publicly, united with the community. This environment is student-centered, providing motivation and access to mentors.
spaces narrow as they descend the building while public spaces expand as they get closer to the street level. This is also symbolic of students developing over time, blending with local community, and finally becoming a part of the greater society. How does a building, itself, teach? A program can be implemented to show occupants how to use the building wisely. Spaces can be oriented to take advantage of the Chicago climate utilizing passive systems. Active systems can be minimized and renewable systems can be added if net zero energy or further efficiencies are desired. This way CADE will teach Chicago and visiting communities by example.
Our layout allows groups to interact in a secure and interactive environment. The high school is largely positioned at the top of the structure for added security. The community has access to lower floors and the opportunity to enter upper floors for outof-school programs or rooftop events. High school
