Bag: Lay out Squares in five rows of four squares each to create the lower bag (Dia. A). Note: If the fabrics are directional, be sure to place the prints as shown on the diagram so they appear right side up on the sides of the bag. Sew squares RST in rows pressing seams in opposite directions in each row as shown by arrows. Sew rows together matching the seams. Press seams toward the center row. The lower bag should measure 18 ½" x 23". Sew a Fabric A upper bag (18 ½" x 6") to each short edge. Press seams toward Fabric A. The bag should now measure 18 ½" x 34". Apply fusible fleece to the wrong side of the bag following manufacturer’s instructions. Using a removable marker, mark quilting lines diagonally approximately 3 ¼" apart across the bag, running through the corners of the squares (Dia. B). Sew on marked lines to quilt. To cut the curves, fold bag in half RST so long edges meet. Using the top edge template, align the straight edges with the top edge and center fold of the bag. Trace the template and cut along traced line through both layers (Dia. C). Repeat for the opposite folded edge. On wrong side of bag, mark a center bottom line 17" from a short edge for making boxed corners (Dia. D). Dia. B

Flatten the corner RST so that the side seam lines up with the center crease line drawn in Step 5 to box the corners. Tip: Stick a pin straight through the seam and the center bottom line to align. Measure 2 ½" from the point, mark and sew on the line from edge to edge (Dia. F); trim ¼" from the seam. Repeat for the remaining corner. Turn bag right side out.

On the right side of the bag, measure ½" from each side of the curved edge and pin the Fabric A side of the straps to the top edge with cut edges even (Dia. G). Note: Check that the Fabric A side of the straps are pinned to the right side of the bag. Sew and then sew again 1⁄8" from edge to reinforce. Lining: Sew a Fabric A lower lining to a Fabric B upper lining along the 18 ½" edges to make one piece 17 ½" x 18 ½"; press seam open. Repeat to make two. Sew the bottom edges of the lower lining RST leaving a 6" opening in the center for turning the bag right side out. Refer to Dia. C to cut lining top curves on lining. Mark side seams as in previous steps and sew. Follow steps to box the bottom corners. Note: Leave lining wrong side out. Place the bag inside the lining RST. Match side seams and top edges; pin edges together and sew. Stitch over the strap area to reinforce the seam. Trim the corners diagonally. Turn bag right side out through the opening in the lining. Sew lining opening closed then push inside bag. Press top edge well then topstitch ¼" from the edge.

Finishing

Sew short edges of embellishment (2 ½" x 18") RST to make a ring; press seam open. Press one long edge ¼" to wrong side; press under again ¼". Sew close to the edge to hem. From the wrong side, sew a gathering stitch ¼" from cut edge leaving long thread tails (Dia. H). Sew a second gathering stitch 1/8" from cut edge. Pull thread ends to gather the center; tie off ends securely (Dia. I). Place on bag as desired and hand stitch in place. Stack buttons and stitch to the center of the embellishment. Dia. H
