Chatham Borough Tree Planting Program 2014 Spring Shade Tree Commission
Every year, Shade Tree Commission plants trees in the Borough. In the Spring of 2014 Chatham Borough planted 38 trees in total. The tree species that were planted are: Cercis Canadensis, Cercis Canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’, Cornus Rubra, Cornus Kousa Milky Way, Cornus florida ‘Cloud Nine’, Cornus florida “Cherokkee Princess”, Quercus palustris Pin Oak, and Acer Rubrus. Enclosed is a list of the tree planting information, a map of the locations where trees were planted, a short term maintenance plan for the newly planted trees, the budget for this program, and after pictures organized by location.

Maintenance Plan The contractor, Coviello Brothers, planted the 37 trees. Each newly planted tree comes with a one-year guarantee and automatic replacement. The contractor will provide mulch bases for the newly planted trees in the first year, when the trees are planted. Maintenance will be performed by the Chatham Borough Department of Public Works and will include – watering, removal of tree stakes and guy wires, and pruning as needed. Each year, for the first three years, new trees are inspected for damage and disease. Pruning will be implemented as need and trees will be trimmed/pruned in the third year to ensure that they are growing properly. Newly planted tree watering is based on several factors. The Borough encourages the adjacent property owner to the newly planted Borough Right-of-Way tree to adopt the tree and shepherd the tree’s watering program. The DPW will assist in watering when the homeowners are unable. Additionally, the DPW monitors the local weather circumstances; during drought frequent watering is implemented.
