To: Child Care Exchange Emerging Leaders Panel From: The Utah Office of Child Care Date: January 5, 2015 Re: Letter of Recommendation for Aurora Howell To Whom It May Concern, I am writing this letter recommending Aurora Howell for the Child Care Exchange Emerging Leader Award. I have known Aurora for fourteen years and I have had the pleasure to work with her in a variety of capacities. I first met Aurora in 2000 when she and I became Education Specialists for the Salt Lake Community Action Program Head Start in Salt Lake City, UT. It was clear from the beginning that Aurora had a deep knowledge base in Head Start and Early Childhood Education. She took every opportunity to initiate innovative ideas that supported the children, families, and staff members in her classrooms. Aurora’s leadership skills were quickly recognized as she moved from Education Specialist to Education Manager within this program. I left Head Start to become the state Early Childhood Professional Development Specialist and it was at that time that I had another opportunity to work with Aurora. Aurora speaks Spanish and she recognized the need for Spanish speaking trainers within our state Career Ladder System, so she became a state approved trainer. She is constantly advocating for Spanish speaking providers and their needs, regardless of the programs they work in. I have recently changed positions once again to become the state School Readiness Specialist, and have had the pleasure of working with Aurora for a third time. The SLCAP Head Start program was awarded a School Readiness Grant and Aurora was assigned to be the point person for that project. She is very enthusiastic and has worked hard to understand and comply with the parameters of this complicated new system. The knowledge that she brings to this grant has helped position the SLCAP Head Start program to move quickly to our Pay for Performance State Preschool Model. I believe Aurora will be seen as a mentor for others in our state as we move forward with this project. Aurora Howell is an excellent example of a knowledgeable and spirted young leader, and I highly recommend her for this recognition. Thank you for your consideration on this matter.
