Christmas Kaleidoscope All seams are 1/4”, unless specified otherwise. NOTE: This project requires the use of a 45 Degree Kaleidoscope Wedge Ruler. This acrylic cutting tool is manufactured by Doheny Publications, Inc. of Edmonton, Washington and is widely available at shops specializing in quiltmaking supplies. As an alternative, you can make a template of cardboard measuring 7-7/8” across the base and 9-1/2” high. 1. Cut crosswise strips of fabric, from selvage to selvage, as follows: Red: White or Beige: Dark Green: Background:
One 4-1/2” strip One 1” strip One 1-1/2” strip One 4” strip
2. Sew the strips together on the long side in the same order you cut them: red, white, dark green and background. Press seams toward the red fabric.
3. Lining up seams with the lines on the kaleidoscope ruler, cut 4 wedges as illustrated below. You will have enough fabric in your strip set to cut 4 wedges in each of two color combinations, so you can make two quilts!
4. To cut the solid wedges, cut one 9-1/2” strip of fabric. Using the kaleidoscope ruler, cut four wedges from the strip. 5. Sew one striped wedge to each solid wedge. Press toward the solid wedge.
6. Sew two pairs together twice, then sew the two halves together.
7. From fabric chosen for corner triangles, cut two 5-7/8” squares. Cut the squares diagonally to make four triangles. Attach to four corners of block.
8. From fabric chosen for first border, cut two 1-1/2” strips. Cut in half to make four 1-1/2” x 20” strips. 9. From fabric chosen for second border, cut four 3-1/2” strips. Shorten each to measure 3-1/2” x 27”. 10. Sew first border to second border, centering the first border lengthwise on the second border.
11. Attach borders to all four sides of quilt top, mitering corners.
