Canadian Arctic C lim bs in A uyuttuq N ational Park, Baffin Island. On A ugust 7, W illard M oulton, Bill M orris, Jim O sborne, Dr. D ouglas H alliday, Dr. M ichael Parker and I were boated to the O verlord C am p at the head o f Pangnirtung Fiord. We carried our too-heavy loads up the W easel Valley in misty w eather, turning east up the T iroka G lacier to set up Base C am p below M ount S if on A ugust 11. Eight inches o f fresh snow on the glacier m ade sled hauling and ski approaches possible. We enjoyed five days o f unusually clear, w arm weather. On the 12th, M orris, P arker and I made the second ascent o f the Sandcastle Ridge. M ean w hile, M oulton, O sborne and Halliday m ade a ski ascent o f a subsidiary peak (reference 404550) three m iles due east o f M ount Sif. On A ugust 13, Parker and I skied over a col and descended north to the base o f a double-peaked m ountain (reference 403550). A first ascent o f the south sum m it was m ade via the
east-face snow fields and a short sum m it rock scram ble. T hat sam e day, M oul ton, M orris and O sborne clim bed a subsidiary buttress o f M ount Sif behind Base Camp. On the 14th, M oulton, M orris and I clim bed a solitary triangular peak im m ediately south o f the Park boundary (reference 491500). The northw est-face route included initial rock scram bling to a steepening snow face and a short pitch up the sum m it block. The final clim b, on A ugust 15, was the first ascent o f the north peak o f a prow -shaped m ountain due east o f M ount Sig (reference 403500). Parker, H alliday and M oulton ascended on skis via a col and south slopes, finishing with a rock scram ble. On the 16th, in w orsening w eather, we carried all the way to O verlord. Jam
