Menhir, A uyuittuq N ational Park, Baffin Island. T hough som ew hat thw arted by bad weather, we m anaged to do a new route on M enhir, the prom inent triangular peak directly behind the T hor Shelter. On A ugust 10, we clim bed a snow gully that leads to the ridge, w hich in fact is a rounded corner that separates the northeast and southeast faces. We clim bed a large chockstone in the gully on the left, using a few m oves o f aid. A fter a rock pitch up a red-rock buttress, we w ere forced right into a series o f iced-up corners and slabs, which form a continuous system m ost o f the way up. We tried to trend left to w hat we hoped w ould be the ridge but w ere forced back right near the top w hen we hit the southeast face. Two m ore difficult pitches w ere follow ed by an easy walk to the very exposed sum m it. We m ade the clim b in 12½ hours in cram pons after the first pitch.
