Definitions of Close Reading Close reading is the interactive, purposeful annotation of complex text. Kelly Gallagher (author of Readicide)

Close, analytic reading entails the careful gathering of observations about a text and careful consideration about what those observations taken together add up to. Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career Readiness

A close reading is a careful and purposeful reading. Well actually, it’s rereading. Dr. Douglas Fisher (ASCD Author)

Close Reading vs. Critical Reading What Does Close Reading Look Like? Students… …read short, challenging passages. …reread with a pen. …dive into text with limited or no prereading activities. …discuss impressions and personal observations of the text with others. …respond to text-dependent questions when rereading.

What Does Critical Reading Look Like? Students… ...preview text and build background. …evaluate the logic of the text. …summarize and outline. …compare and contrast. …respond to multi-level questions.

Annotation Helps Struggling and Proficient Readers For Struggling Readers: Annotation helps students focus while reading. For Proficient Readers: Annotation provides a framework for text analysis and discussions.

Annotation Basics 1) Teach the most important annotation strategies one at a time. 2) Annotation must be done during independent reading – not after. 3) Simple is better. A few thoughtful annotations work best. 4) Train students to annotate with a goal in mind (e.g. to compare/contrast, discuss, summarize, paraphrase, answer a prompt).

How to Use Annotation Code Cards:

1. Copy the annotation code cards on cardstock. 2. Cut and use as a reference while reading novels textbooks, articles, and short stories.

Annotation Log

1. Record two or three annotations for each assignment. 2. Submit completed logs, or use the log to facilitate class discussions.

SAMPLE

SHORT RESPONSE FRAMEWORK CLAIM IT. (1 point) Three of the most interesting phrases from Roald Dahl’s description of Agatha Trunchbull include: 1) “bends iron bars,” 2) “massive thighs,” and 3) “arrogant eyes.”

List of Phrases AgathaTrunchbullDescription: 1. muscles clearly in evidence 2. massive thighs 3. bends iron bars 4. tears telephone books in half 5. had been a famous athlete 6. had a cruel mouth 7. thick arms

PROVE IT. (2 points) These phrases help readers understand that even though this character is human, she possesses characteristics typically used to describe a monster. The fact that she is capable of “bending iron bars” indicates that she is stronger than the average mortal and that trying to contain her would be pretty pointless. Her “massive thighs” and “arrogant eyes,” tell me that her mere presence is simply terrifying.

8. obstinate chin 9. arrogant eyes 10. bull neck

SIMPLIFY IT. (1 point)

It is evident that Agatha Trunchbull will be a significant antagonist in this novel since the author spent four paragraphs describing every unlikeable thing about her.
