Club News—by Jo Moore Dardanup Open - Sunday 11th September The club's main state event is coming up next Sunday, 11th September and caters for all levels of rider. Lots of work goes into this event and many thanks to all the helpers. If you are not helping out, we need as many riders supporting this event as possible as we have significant sponsorship, so a great chance to have a go. Reminder that entries for the race close midnight Tuesday night through CWA website.

SPR Interclub Challenge The green team at SPR have issued the challenge and there will be a prize for the first rider from SPR or SW home in each of the graded races at the Dardanup Open. Hopefully the SW riders can work together and get someone over the line in front of the Kermits with SW Pride on the line!!

Ne w Ri d e r De v e l o p me nt Program Has Another Great Turn Out!-by Graeme Dunnet There was another fantastic turn out for the second week of the six week Rider Development program last Sunday with over 35 riders and helpers again assembling at the Bunbury Entertainment Centre for the 9am start. With some basic bike maintenance scheduled to start the session it was very opportune that Nicole had discovered a front tyre flat when she got her bike out of the car. After a quick demonstration on removing your wheel and changing a tube by Graeme and Andrew it was back to recounting some of the basics from last week including helmet checks, the ABCs and some more braking practice. The group then moved onto some new drills to practice riding together and holding a straight line while looking back to check for cars etc. After everyone got a handle on this technique (and it does sound easier than it is, especially when the drink bottles you ride between get closer together!!) it was time to head out to the Big Swamp again to practice group bunch riding skills. The key target skill this week was to new fashion level at the Development Ride. Photo: Evan ride off the back of the bunch (after Strudwick checking behind) and smoothly to the front while keeping the bunch together. This gave everyone an opportunity to practice bunch communication, calls and pacing, holding a line and riding smoothly as a bunch. The juniors meanwhile were practising their “attack skills” and managed to lap the other bunches several times as they raced around the circuit. In fact there was a minor mishap at one stage when one of the juniors learnt “how to roll” when taking a fall off onto the grass verge (no harm to rider or bike thankfully). After quite a few laps it was decided it was time to head back into the Dome for a coffee and some more all important socialising. It was great to see the good numbers again and the keenness to learn, ride together and have fun. There is already some “buzz” happening about the participation ride coming up on the 11th September out at Dardanup, which will also be when the $1,500 bike prize will be drawn. Don’t forget the ride is on again next Sunday, 4th September at 9am (after all the dads have had a nice breakfast in bed!!). Many thanks again to all the helpers for the day: Jo, Andrew, Mick, Robbie, Felicity and Leonie

Win a $1,500 Bike All riders who do not wish to race are encouraged to come and have a go at the Ferguson Valley Cycle Challenge. Participants can 'race' it and times will be recorded for the 39km or else view it as a challenge and take in the fantastic scenery of the Ferguson Valley. All levels of rider welcome to have a go at the 24/39km challenge and everyone is in with a chance to win the $1,500 bike from Fitzroy Cycles or some great spot prizes from Crank'n'Cycles. You can register on the day but to make life simple, it would be appreciated if you pre-register through the SWCC website. All riders who have registered for the Development Series are already entered in the Ferguson Valley Challenge and do not need to register online again.

Group Riding Tip– The last rider to move off the back into the outside/fast line calls “last wheel” Injury Management RICE. R is for REST. Keep the injured area supported. Avoid using the injured area for at least 48-72 hours as continued activity will increase bleeding and damage.
