Club Profile: Newcastle (Staffs) Tri Club Newcastle (Staffs) Tri club is a friendly, up and coming triathlon club in Newcastle under Lyme. The club was formed in 2006 by Ken and Julia Matheson who boast impressive pedigrees of their own and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with club members. Our club kit is a distinctive red, grey and black outfit and can be seen at many events. Newcastle Tri is the only local triathlon club in the area, the next nearest being Stafford Tri. We currently have 240 members which includes over 50 juniors, although this number is rapidly increasing due to the popularity of triathlon in general. Several of these members compete at international level. Newcastle Tri is run by a committee of volunteer members who are working together to ensure the future development of the club and help establish it as one of the leading triathlon clubs in the Midlands. Approachable and friendly The club caters to all abilities, from novice through to seasoned international and is well known for its warm and friendly attitude towards everyone. This welcoming approach is a key theme of the club who provide support and encouragement to all, regardless of aptitude or experience.
Family-orientated We are also a ‘family-friendly’ club in that they actively encourage parents to become involved in their children’s training and development as triathletes. As a result of this several of the parents help out at the coached training sessions for juniors and play an active role in the running of the club, many of who train and compete themselves. The club has an impressive set of juniors, several of whom look set to be triathlon stars of the future. They are provided with first rate coaching, sound advice and support in which to achieve their goals. All of this takes place in a safe and secure environment providing reassurance for juniors and their parents. Coaching for all Newcastle Tri offer coached sessions in all three triathlon disciplines: swim, bike and run. This is supported by weekly training schedules, specialist advice and technical support. We also hold ‘one-off’ sessions which have included individual bike set up, bike maintenance, class room work shops/seminars. If a group of members request a particular activity then a session is arranged to accommodate this. We have a qualified and established coaching team which is committed to helping the members of the club achieve their ambition and potential.

Training Camps We organise a ‘warm weather’ training camp in May each year: this is an ideal opportunity for club members to improve their techniques within a purpose built environment. These training camps have taken place in Spain and France and have proven to be highly successful. The club has recently added weekend training camps in the UK. In the early part of spring we have a regular cycling weekend in Wales which focuses on bike handling skills and group riding. We also have a triathlon based weekend in Wales in September which includes sea swimming.
