Former Drama Centre graduate Colin Firth is the bookie's favourite for the Oscar for Best Actor at the Academy Awards held Janary 27.

Firth, 50, has already been named ‘Best Actor’ for his role in box office smash hit ‘The King's Speech’ at the Golden Globes ceremony last month, which is seen as a firm indication that he is in line for Oscar success. The film, which is up for a total of 12 Oscar nominations, revolves around Firth's restrained Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter give a golden but powerful performance as the vocally performance in The Kings Speach. Last year he was nominated for Best Actor in ‘A Single Man’, and recently became honoured with a star on the Hollywood ‘Walk of Fame’.

He spent two years studying at the Drama Centre in Chalk Farm where he was first discovered while playing Hamlet in his final term. Despite his fame and success, Firth remains down to earth. His extensive charity work, testimony to the strong moral compass, has helped make his performance in 'The King's Speech' a fitting role. He keeps strong ties with the college, and has recently become Honorary President of The Friends of Drama Centre. His last visit to the Drama Centre came in 2009, when he spent time speaking to students individually and answering questions. The Drama Centre is part of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and has a successful alumnus, with stars such as Pierce Brosnan, Helen McCrory, Simon Callow, Frances de la Tour, Tara Fitzgeral, John Simm and Adrian Noble.
