Continue to build your story. Take advantage of the opportunity to explore and develop your talents. Join a team, get involved with a club and volunteer with a local community organization. Fill up your extracurricular time with a few meaningful activities in which you can see potential for greater involvement in the future. It is not the quantity of activities that is important to colleges but the quality and depth of your participation.
Keep up-to-date with your student’s academic progress. Review all materials sent home from Louisville Collegiate School.
Focus on your classes. Most colleges will consider your coursework from freshman year through senior year when you apply for admission.

Attend 10th Grade College Counseling Parents’ Night in the Fall.
During the first quarter, schedule your initial individual appointment with your assigned college counselor. Attend college counseling seminars in your life skills classes. Take the PSAT in October. Louisville Collegiate School will register you and administer it during school hours. Attend local college fairs in the Fall and Spring. In the Winter, meet with your college counselor to review your curriculum plans for your Junior and Senior years. Continue to visit different types of colleges. STUDENTS Stay on top of more demanding coursework. Elect a manageable extracurricular program and do a few things well rather than many things halfheartedly. It’s okay to drop some extracurricular activities in order to allocate time and energy towards your stronger interests. In the Fall, set up an individual meeting with your college counselor to develop a standardized testing plan. After that meeting, register for the tests. If you receive testing accomodations on standardized tests, please contact the Director of Learning Services. Hundreds of college admissions counselors visit our campus every year. In the Fall, sign up for and attend those college visits of interest to you. Attend local college fairs in the Fall and Spring. Take the PSAT in October. Louisville Collegiate School will register you and administer the exam during school hours. Register for and take the practice ACT that will be administered at Louisville Collegiate School.
PARENTS Attend 11th Grade College Counseling Parents’ Night in the Fall. Help your child adjust to the increased workload. Many students will be doing college-level work for the first time. Review your child’s standardized testing plan. Help your child register for the tests. Review PSAT results carefully. Help your child understand what types of questions and topics need more attention. Attend Financial Aid Night in the Winter. Meet with your child’s college counselor in the Spring to discuss your child’s college list, summer plans, testing, and the application process. Continue to visit colleges with your child. Try to focus your visits to the schools that your child has identified as potential good fits. Attend the Alumni College Fair in the Spring. Attend the College Admissions Panel in the Spring.

Attend 12th Grade College Counseling Parents’ Night before Back to School Night in September.
Attend the Essay Writing Workshop at the beginning of the school year.
Continue to encourage and support your child. The college admissions process will feel like an extra course to your child. Your caring support will be noticed and appreciated.
Check back in with and thank the teachers who are writing your recommendation letters. Finalize standardized testing. Arrange to have your test scores sent to colleges directly from the testing agency. Allow 3-4 weeks for processing of materials. Engage in The Edge: Share. Consider attending at least one AppLab session in the Fall. Continue to visit colleges if your schedule permits. Sign up for and attend visits from visiting college admissions officers.
Stay in close communication with your child about college application plans, testing schedules, college visits, and important deadlines. Attend the Financial Aid Night in the Winter. File the FAFSA, and if required, the CSS Profile, in order to apply for financial aid. As a reminder, your child must submit a deposit by May 1 to only one college. Celebrate! This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter in your family’s life.
Be aware of all application requirements and deadlines and submit in a timely fashion. Attend Financial Aid Night in the Winter. When decisions arrive, be good to yourself and your classmates. Celebrate your success thoughtfully. Your likely school may be someone else’s dream school. Immediately inform your college counselor of all your admissions decisions. Thoughtfully consider your college options, attend admitted student events, and make your final college choice. If you opt to remain on a waitlist, be sure to meet with your counselor to discuss strategies. Submit your deposit to one school by May 1 to confirm your intention to attend or risk losing your place.
