Collegiate Varsity Committee: June 5th, 9am. Conference Call.
NorCal Collegiate Varsity Committee - 2013 Wed June 5th, 9am Conference Call MINUTES NOTE: All minutes are final after approval by the committee and all committee decisions are subject to final approval by the Board.
CVC Mission/Objectives The broad mission of the Collegiate Varsity Committee (CVC) is to help the NorCal tennis community become aware that Collegiate Varsity Tennis is not only an integral part of the player development pathway (10 & Under to Junior to College to Professional) but also is central to growing future champions off the court. The average age of successful professional players continues to increase, thus college tennis is a pivotal part of the competitive pathway. We want to increase awareness and grow community support for the great college tennis programs we have in our section. We also want to see more of our NorCal juniors going on to play college tennis. The Committee will help to put the Collegiate Varsity footprint on tennis in Northern California. OBJECTIVES: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Collegiate Varsity Committee: June 5th, 9am. Conference Call.
Wed June 5th, 9am. CVC Conference Call Minutes: Committee Members on the call: Paul Torricelli (chair), Amanda Augustus, Loke Davis, Sylvain Malroux, , Ben Cabell, Lisa Alipaz, Ryan Redondo, Chad Skorupka. Committee members Absent: Brandon Coupe, Charlotte Scatliffe, Pablo Pires De Almeida, and Ryan Stotland. The meeting was called to order by Paul Torricelli at 9:10am. 1. Report on NorCal College Programs! Amy acknowledges that many NorCal college programs are improving each year. Sylvain noted that SJSU won their conference title this year. Amanda noted that Cal also had a strong year, and acknowledged Stanford Women for an incredible run this season. 2. ITA Summer Circuit – Budget Request Paul shared with the group the CVC proposal to financially support the inaugural NorCal ITA Summer Circuit as we look to build awareness and grow participation in the upcoming years. Ryan Redondo, one of the Circuit Tournament Directors, acknowledged that the projected budget (attached) is accurate, and that the events are expected to be financially flat or perhaps even run at a deficit, especially in the first few years of hosting. Chad Skorupka suggested that this proposal is quite substantial and that it might be a great idea to introduce a process where each host site submits a post tournament budget. The financial support would be subject to evaluation by staff, and funds would only be issued if the tournament was running at a financial loss, and up to the amount of the loss. Amanda and Chad agreed that this flexibility would ensure that we are supporting those events that need the help, thus ensuring the most effective use of the funds. Several other members expressed support for this concept. Paul then took a straw vote to see who was in support of the budget request as long as the release of funds is pending submission of a profit/loss budget at the completion of the event. 8 members were in favor, 0 were opposed, and there were no abstentions. 3. Events: NorCal Summer Teams & Generation Gap Page | 2 of 7
Collegiate Varsity Committee: June 5th, 9am. Conference Call. Amy noted that we have strong interest from College Coaches for this year’s Team NorCal Coaching positions. Paul also noted this and thanked our college for supporting junior development in NorCal. 4. College Info Session – panelists – June 15th 12noon – Paul reached out to the group to see who would be available to help on June 15 th as a panelist for our College Info Session. Ben Cabell noted he might be able to attend and help. Amy explained that last year’s 18/u Sectionals Info Session at Sacramento State had a low turnout. Our 16/u Info Session at the NorCal Office (close proximity to sectionals site) was standing room only and had very strong attendance. Based on this it might make the most sense to focus these efforts around the younger divisions. 5. Showdowns and Campus Kids Day’s for 2013/2014 – deadline is the end of the summer – for promotion and Service Rep support Paul explained to the group that advanced planning for Showdowns and Campus Kids Days would be ideal as this would allow the section to support, perhaps help staff, and also promote these events. 6. Adult Opens and USONP Amy noted that emails have been sent to all NorCal College coaches informing them about Adult Opens this summer. Amy explained that these are great competitive opportunities for college players during the summer months. Amanda requested an email be sent out with registration information for the upcoming USONP event at Chamisal in Salinas. 7. Next calls for 2013 - 8/7 and 12/4 at 9am. The meeting was adjourned at 9:45am.

Collegiate Varsity Committee: June 5th, 9am. Conference Call. USTA NorCal CVC – June 5th, 2013 Meeting Budget Request for ITA Summer Circuit Tournaments Event Profile: Nearly 30,000 men and women have competed in ITA Summer Circuit events since it began in 1993. The circuit provides college players, as well as juniors, adults and alumni players the opportunity to compete in organized events. For NCAA compliance purposes, the events within the ITA Summer Circuit are categorized as "open"; therefore anyone is eligible to compete in these events as long as he/she is a current ITA member. The ITA Summer Circuit is currently made up of eight regional circuits (East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Texas and West) consisting of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, leading up to the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Indiana in August. NorCal has been included after approval from the ITA – to increase the number of circuits to nine. By adding our NorCal Circuit we have created an opportunity for 2 of our players (one man and one woman) to earn their way into the national event in Indiana. The entry fee for all Summer Circuit tournaments is $60 (includes singles and doubles), with the exception of the National Clay Court Championships (Mt. Lebanon/Pittsburgh) and the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships which are both $70 (includes singles and doubles). All tournaments will use a 10-point match tie-breaker for the third set of singles; all doubles will be 8 game pro-sets. An American player who competes in at least 3 tournaments and is the point leader for that Region will automatically qualify and receive some travel reimbursement for the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships (point chart is below). Additional information specific to each tournament can be found on the registration page. These events are a great stepping stone for our juniors as well as competitive opportunities for our competitive adults. This circuit will be of great value to the section and the reason we are requesting financial support to get the ITA Circuit off the ground successfully.

Collegiate Varsity Committee: June 5th, 9am. Conference Call.
Creates more awareness for junior players about College Tennis opportunities – thus supporting the American Pathway. Juniors will be playing on college campuses, will be able to compete with and against college players, and will have the opportunity to play in front of college coaches who are serving as our Circuit Tournament Directors.
Supporting our NorCal College Coaches (in the early years) who are stepping up as host sites as we launch the NorCal ITA Circuit. We anticipate breakeven or small financial loss as we market and promote our new circuit. Request of for USTA NorCal to help cover the costs of officials and athletic trainers, which are required at events as per ITA rules.
Advancement opportunity for our players – into the National Event in Indiana, and possibly on to the All American collegiate events in the fall season.
Opportunity to continue to institute the Junior Council principles and pilot ‘level based play’ in NorCal. The ITA has agreed to allow any Tournament Director to have their event be level based – and organized according to the Universal Tennis Ratings.
This request will be for 2013 only. The CVC will meet again post circuit and evaluate financial needs for the following year. The Committee’s intention is for the ITA Circuit to be self-sustaining within a 3 year period.
Possible opportunities for our rookie officials to shadow and gain experience.
