NorCal Collegiate Varsity Committee - 2012 Tues Nov 20th, 9am Attendance: Paul Torricelli (chair), Amanda Augustus, Kat Winterhalter, Loke Davis, Ryan Redondo, Sylvain Malroux, Chad Skorupka, Charlotte Scatliffe. Diane Brooks, Christine Ferry, Jennifer Castle. CVC Mission/Objectives The broad mission of the Collegiate Varsity Committee (CVC) is to help the NorCal tennis community become aware that Collegiate Varsity Tennis is not only an integral part of the player development pathway (10 & Under to Junior to College to Professional) but also is central to growing future champions off the court. The average age of successful professional players continues to increase, thus college tennis is a pivotal part of the competitive pathway. We want to increase awareness and grow community support for the great college tennis programs we have in our section. We also want to see more of our NorCal juniors going on to play college tennis. The Committee will help to put the Collegiate Varsity footprint on tennis in Northern California.

Agenda: 1. New members – 9am Charlotte Scatliffe, new Head Coach at UOP gave us a brief introduction. Also Charlotte announced that she received the ITA multicultural grant to attend the ITA Coaches Convention this December. 2. SMC showdown – 9:10am

Kat Winterhalter gave the CVC a great recount of the most recent showdown. SMC had 34 participants – ranging from age 8 to 40 years old. The event was level based and run using the Universal Tennis Ratings as well as the NTRP and the Tennis Recruiting 5 star system that rates players. It was age blind and gender blind. There was 3 draws and everyone played both singles and doubles. Amy gave a brie recap of Ryan Redondo’s showdown at UOP. The event had up to 50 players and many great college and junior players. It was a boys/men’s event and the event was run as a team competition – to simulate college tennis dual matches. The feedback from players and parents was fantastic! Also in the future – we can use TENNISLINK to perhaps register the players, and to get the word out about these events. USTA Communications will be posting a story about the event! 3. 6. ITA Summer Circuit 2013 – 9:35am Chad Skorupka has reached out to Lin – and the report is that we need to make a strong case that we have great facilities, experienced coaches have run tournaments before, and a strong demand so that we can make sure the draws are strong. Quality is emphasized – rather than potential income to coaches and programs! Officials and also trainers are required for the event. Amy will verify with interested host sites (SJSU, St Mary’s, UOP, Davis, and HBC. Amanda Augustus verified that the ITA circuit is mainly for college players. It is sanctioned competition with the potential of advancement into the national tournament, and from there into the All American as a wild card. Paul added that HBC can be the backup, and host school can have event at HBC. 7.
