Virgin Australia aims to make a difference, and is proud to partner with a range of community groups. Here's the latest.
Cyclists ride to tackle the problem. From 3-10 October, more than 60 cyclists will take part in TourXOz, a fundraiser for the Black Dog Institute. For eight days the team will grind their pedals from Adelaide to Darwin, finishing on World Mental Health Day. They hope to raise $250,000. "The money will continue the Black Dog Institute's work in mental health research, as well as support its education programs and tools," said TourXOz co-organiser Neil Jackson. "We expect to impact the lives of people touched by mental illness. This year, we're including an Indigenous community near Uluru to talk openly about a condition that particularly [affects] aboriginal communities where suicide rates are among the highest in the world." To donate visit www.tourxoz.com. For more about the Black Dog Institute visitwww.blackdoginstitute.org.au.
THEY'VE NAILED IT An initiative that aims for a world where no child experiences violence. Polished Man is a fundraising campaign that challenges men to end violence against children. Launched by YGAP, a not-for-profit incubator for social change, it encourages men to influence change by becoming 'polished men', and painting one fingernail to represent the one in five children who experience violence globally. The majority of this violence is committed by people known to the child. The campaign runs 1-15 October. Sign up to start a fundraising page or donate at www.polishedman.com.
Q&A jane Hutchinson is the CEO ofTasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC). Tell us about TLC. It was started by three blokes who, in 2001, each put S50 on the table. They incorporated with S101 and opened a bank account with the remaining S49. It's grown to become one of Tasmania's largest private landowners, working on conservation projects across more than 65,000 hectares of private land in Tasmania. What are TLC's aims? Our goal is to create a network of natural areas that deliver long-term security for our native species and ecosystems for future generations. What do you love about your job? It makes a lot of sense to be doing something positive to protect some of Tasmania's most significant natural places. I love the feeling of knowing the places the TLC has preserved will be enjoyed long after I am gone. What challenges do you face? One of our greatest challenges is the amount of opportunity. There are so many projects and we would love to do them all, but we have limited resources so we need to do the things that
give us the best nature conservation return for our effort. Tell us about the New Leaf Carbon Project, and how Virgin Australia is involved. The New Leaf Carbon Project sits across 12,130 hectares of [native forest], much of it in the remote central highlands of Tasmania, home to nationally endangered and internationally red-listed Tasmanian devils and threatened spotted-tailed quolls, Tasmanian wedgetailed eagles, Clarence galaxias fish and Miena cider gum. Virgin Australia
has purchased New Leaf Carbon Project credits to support its Fly Carbon Neutral program, and by ticking the carbon offset option on a flight, Virgin Australia guests support the TLC's New Leaf Carbon Project — not just to keep the carbon in the forests, but also for the plants and wildlife that make Tasmania so special. The income the TLC receives goes towards technology to help scientists and volunteers do our work. Visit www. tasland.org.au or tick the carbon offset box when booking.
