Gambling Student-athletes, coaches, and staff may not, under NCAA Bylaw 10.3, participate in gambling activities. The following activities must be avoided as it may render a student-athlete ineligible or result in severe disciplinary action for the student-athlete or the University of Florida. 

 

Providing any information (e.g., reports concerning team morale, game plans, and injuries to team members) to any individual that could assist anyone involved in organized gambling activities. Making a bet on any intercollegiate or professional athletics contest. Accepting a bet or bribe or agreeing to throw, fix, or illegally influence the outcome of any intercollegiate contest. Participating in any gambling activities that involve intercollegiate or professional athletics through a bookmaker, a parlay card, or any other method employed by organized gambling.

If you are still confused about what is allowed and what is not here is a simple list of what a studentathlete should NOT do: 

    

NO wagers for any item (e.g., cash, shirt, dinner) on ANY professional or college sports event, even those that don’t involve your college. NO sports “ pools,” even those run by your friends in the dorm. NO Internet gambling on sports events (including the use of a Facebook bracket) NO fantasy leagues that award a prize and require a fee to participate. NO sports wagering using “ 800” numbers. NO exchange of information about your team with ANYONE who gambles. In other words, no information about injuries, new plays, team morale, discipline problems, or anything else.

NCAA Policy Regarding Gambling 

The NCAA membership has adopted specific rules prohibiting student-athletes, athletics department staff members, and conference office staff from engaging in sports wagering (Bylaw 10.3). NCAA rules also prohibit non-athletics department staff members who have responsibilities within or over the athletics department, such as chancellors or presidents and faculty athletics representatives from engaging in sports wagering. NCAA national office employees are also prohibiting from engaging in sports wagering. The rules against sports wagering applies to any institutional practice or competition (intercollegiate, amateur, or professional) in an NCAA-sanctioned sport. Sports competition should be appreciated for the inherent benefits related to participation of student-athletes, coaches, and institutions in fair contests, not the amount of money wagered on the outcome of the competition. A student-athlete involved in sports wagering on the student-athlete's institution permanently loses all remaining regular-season and postseason eligibility in all sports. A student-athlete who is involved in any sports wagering activity that involves college sports or professional athletics, through a internet gambling, bookmaker, a parlay card or any other method employed by organized gambling, will be ineligible for all regular-season and postseason competition for at least one year.
