2012 Concordia University Volleyball Game Notes GOLDEN BEARS COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH BRADY STARKEY

- 10th season - 312-27 overall, 156-4 NSIC - 5-time NCAA Champion (2007, 08, 09, 10, 11) - 30-match active NCAA postseason win streak - 9-time NSIC Champion In his 10th year as head coach at Concordia, three-time AVCA National Coach of the Year Brady Starkey and his staff have turned the squad into a premier program in the country. The Golden Bears have captured NCAA Division II Championships in five consecutive seasons - the only NCAA volleyball program to accomplish the feat at the Division I or II levels. Their five total volleyball titles is more than any program as well, with the sport dating back to 1980 at the women’s Division II level. Among the five championships, they’ve won on neutral floors (2007, 2010), their home floor in front of standing-room only crowds (2008, 2009) and on the road in front of a capacity crowd (2011). Their championships have come in the eastern, central and pacific time zones. Their first national championship in 2007 was the first women’s team NCAA Division II championship in the history of the Northern Sun and just the second overall team national championship. In his nine seasons, Starkey’s teams have captured the Northern Sun championship every season, reached the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the region championship (also known as Sweet Sixteen) match all nine years. They’ve captured seven region championships, punching a ticket to the NCAA Elite Eight each time. In four NSIC Tournaments, the Golden Bears captured three of the championships (2004, 05, 06). The team has produced at least 32 wins in all nine campaigns including a perfect 37-0 dream season in 2009 that culminated with their third straight national title, winning on their home floor at Gangelhoff Center for the second year in a row. He’s coached some of the top players in NCAA Division II volleyball history, including two-time AVCA Player of the Year Maggie McNamara - the all-time assists record holder for Division II volleyball (total assists, and assists/set). McNamara, named the Honda Division II Female Athlete of the Year after her senior year (2009), was the first of four AVCA National Freshman of the Year under Starkey (McNamara, Emily Palkert, Amanda Konetchy, Katie Habeck). The team also featured one of the top-9 finalists, Mary Slinger, for the NCAA Woman of the Year award for the 2008-09 academic year, featuring the top female student-athletes from around the country across all three divisions and all women’s sports sanctioned by the NCAA. The program has also featured eight CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-Americans and 68 NSIC All-Academic student-athletes. Starkey was named head coach after serving as an assistant for Concordia for three seasons under Geoff Carlston. Carlston, now a head coach at Ohio State University and previously the head coach at Ohio University, has coached six teams to the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level. Together, Starkey assisted Carlston in rebuilding a volleyball program that was 0-18 in Northern Sun play the year before they arrived. By their third year working with the program, the Golden Bears achieved their first-ever national ranking and finished 24-9 with a 13-5 mark in league play. Before coming to Concordia, Starkey spent five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of St. Thomas. While at St. Thomas, the Tommies finished in the top four in the MIAC and won the conference title in 1999. During the 1998 season, Starkey had co-head coaching responsibilities with his wife, Penny. Starkey began his coaching career in 1992 as an assistant coach at Minnetonka High School, where he worked with the b-squad and junior varsity teams. He spent a number of years with the 17-open team of Minnesota One Junior Olympics and currently coaches the 17’s team at Minnesota One. Starkey earned his undergraduate degree in history from Metropolitan State University in 2002. He and Penny are the parents of two daughters, Teagan Shea and Kayli Jade.

ASSISTANT COACH GEORGE PADJEN

Padjen enters his 10th season with the Golden Bear program in 2012. He is involved in all aspects of coaching for the volleyball program which has captured five consecutive NCAA Division II Championships (2007 to 2011), seven regional championships and nine NSIC Championships. Padjen was hired in 2003 when Brady Starkey was named the program’s new head coach. Padjen works closely with Starkey in all aspects of the program including recruiting, scouting, game planning, operations and in practices. Although he fills any role necessary on the coaching staff, he works specifically with the setters. Prior to joining the Concordia staff, he was assistant volleyball coach at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. from 1999 to 2002. He also has coaching experience with the Junior Olympics with Minnesota Select from 2004 to present coaching 17-1’s. He has coached numerous young athletes who have advanced to play collegiately through the Select team. He is a graduate from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a degree in political science. He resides in Maple Grove, Minn. with his wife, Amanda and their daughter, Mia.

ASSISTANT COACH HAILEY COWLES

Hailey Cowles joins the Concordia University volleyball coaching staff after playing collegiately at the University of Minnesota. Cowles, a native of Eden Prairie, Minn., was one of two team captains for the Gophers in 2011 and ranks sixth in team history with 1,286 career digs.

After tearing her ACL in 2010, Cowles returned to the lineup for her senior year as a six-rotation player. She ranked first on the squad in total attacks (807), second in service aces (21) and digs (370), and fourth in kills (255, 2.06 per set) and assists (74).

2012 Concordia University Volleyball Game Notes

THE SERIES... Friday’s match-up against Southwest Minnesota State marks the 45th meeting between the two squads. The Golden Bears hold the all-time series record 23-20-1. The Mustangs didn’t drop a single match in the first 19 meetings with a 18-0-1 record until CU turned the tables in 2002. Since 2002, the Golden Bears hold a 23-2 advantage. On Saturday, Concordia and Sioux Falls will meet for the first time since 1999. The Cougars hold the all-time series advantage 3-1. LAST TIME OUT... Last Friday and Saturay, Concordia participated in the Colorado Premier Challenge, hosted by Metro State and Regis University, and claimed the Silver Championship. The Golden Bears were upset by West Florida 3-1 in their first match, but rebounded with 3-1 victories over No. 17 Lewis University, No. 10 Metro State and No. 11 CSU San Bernardino. ON THE ATTACK... Kayla Koenecke was an instrumental factor in the Golden Bears’ 3-1 weekend at the prestigious Colorado Premier Challenge last Friday and Saturday. The All-American right side hitter tallied 45 kills in 94 attempts for a .351 attack percentage over four matches. In the opening match against West Florida – a 3-1 upset loss – Koencke posted 12 kills as well as 12 digs for a double-double. She backed that performance up with a 10-for-20 rate on the attack in a 3-1 win over No. 17 Lewis University. To begin Saturday’s play, the Delano native had a pedestrian five kills in 20 tries in a 3-1 win over No. 10 Metro State but ensued with an absolute dominant performance in the Silver Championship Game. In a rematch of the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship Game, the Golden Bears defeated No. 11 CSU San Bernardino 3-1 with Koenecke leading the way. She tallied a team-high 17 kills in 28 attempts (.607) as well as leading the team with 16 digs. OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR... In what comes as no surprise, Amanda Konetchy distributed a team-high 187 assists in four matches last weekend at the Colorado Premier Challenge. Against West Florida, the All-American tallied 50 assists along with seven digs. She posted a double-double against Lewis University with 45 assists and 16 digs. Against Metro State, Konetchy once again collected a double-double with 39 assists and 11 digs. And to cap the weekend against CSU San Bernardino, Konetchy served up 53 assists with eight digs, leading to All-Tournament Team honors. NEARING 3,000... Konetchy has posted 306 assists this season and is now 105 away from career assist No. 3,000. She would become the third player in CU history to reach the milestone, joining the likes of Maggie McNamara (7,351; 2006-09) and Cailin Terhaar (6,724; 2001-05). DIGGER... Kara Pioske was once again a staple on the Concordia defense. The outside hitter successfully received 40 digs in four matches at the Colorado Premier Challenge. She recorded double figure digs in all but one of the matches, including a team-high 13 against Lewis University. Pioske also had two double-doubles with 11 digs and 13 kills against Metro State, and 13 digs and 11 kills against Lewis. Adding to the stat sheet are one solo block and five block assists.
