Psalms Sermon Series Supports Session 6: The Creator Sermon Title: A Respectful Response to Royalty Passage: Psalm 95:1-11
Connection to Passage The psalmist sought to prepare God’s people to worship God as royalty with a reverent attitude, heart, and spirit. Worshipers need to know about God’s royal nature and how to enter into His presence. Introduction/Opening Imagine being invited to the Oval Office for a private meeting with the president of the United States of America. You would prepare for that meeting. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob invites us to meet with Him. How do we respond to the Father’s divine invitation? The psalmist equips readers to have a respectful response to royalty. God is royalty! Outline I. Approach Royalty Together (Ps. 95:1-2) Is the church necessary? In today’s culture, many people admit that they like Jesus, they just don’t like His church. That admission must break the Lord’s heart. Jesus gave His life for the church. Isolation is one of the enemy’s tools. Togetherness is an important reality in the Christian life (Heb. 10:25). In order to carry one another’s burdens (Gal. 6:2), we have to share life together. a. Congregational singing remains important (Ps. 95:1-2). i. The focus is on participation, not performance. ii. The content is about exaltation, not entertainment. b. Personal salvation remains immovable (Ps. 95:1). i. God is the Source of salvation. ii. God is the Rock of salvation. II. Adore Royalty Together (Ps. 95:3-7) The psalmist continues the theme of togetherness. Lone-ranger Christianity isn’t taught in God’s Word. The church isn’t perfect. Nevertheless, believers still need one another. Adoring God is a personal and corporate spiritual discipline. As we enjoy the beauty and splendor of God’s creation, a word of caution is in order. We’re to worship the Creator, not the creation. In Paul’s day, people “worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator” (Rom. 1:25). Why are we to adore God as royalty? a. God is our Creator. i. The earth is the Lord’s (Isa. 45:12). ii. God is the Author and Sustainer of life (Jer. 1:4-5). iii. We’re fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps. 139:14).

b. God is our Redeemer. i. God loves us (John 3:16; Rom. 5:8). ii. Sin separates us (Rom. 3:23). iii. Grace saves us (Eph. 2:8-9). iv. Jesus guides us (John 10:3-4). III. Address Royalty Together (Ps. 95:7-11) God isn’t silent. He continues to speak. Addressing God is an invitation to listen to His voice. The psalmist is clear that posture matters when we address God (Ps. 95:6). In order to live life God’s way and serve Him, the Spirit convicts us of the need to know how to listen to God. The psalmist explained that failure to listen to God brought severe consequences. a. God reveals disobedient behavior. i. Sin always finds us out (Num. 32:23). ii. Disobedience causes us to miss God’s best (Ps. 95:11). b. God rewards obedient behavior. i. Worship God (Ps. 95:6). ii. Hear God (Ps. 95:7-8). iii. Follow God (Ps. 95:8-9). iv. Trust God (Ps. 95:10-11). Conclusion God is royalty! The church is necessary! Worship is transformational! As we approach royalty together, adore royalty together, and address royalty together, we’ll encounter a holy and sovereign Father, Creator, and Redeemer. Real worship isn’t about passing time. Spending time with royalty always changes us.
