What if I can’t use my hands or my legs? What if I’m in a wheelchair, have a feeding tube, can’t talk? When you think about the what-ifs of your future, what scares you the most? Enough is enough, God. Have you ever felt this way? Why do you think Ed addresses God in this moment? It was the longest drive I have ever taken. What experiences in your life have had this surreal time-altering quality? How did you make it through to the other side?

When you’re living in fear, every issue is overwhelming and discouraging. When has fear overwhelmed you? Why does fear have such power? I didn’t want to know what was going on. When have you had to let go of your plans for the future? What was the result? Where was God in that result?

God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Hebrews 13:5–6 Do you feel like God is with you? Do you feel like you are not forsaken? ALS taught me I’m not in control. How have you learned this lesson? What does it mean to not be in control? How do you make decisions while knowing that you cannot control the outcome? They don’t sow or reap or store in barns. What are the things we do to protect ourselves against the future? Consider the birds. What do they have to teach us?

When you’re worried about the future, it’s hard to find God. When you’re living in the moment, He’s right there with you. What does living in the moment look like for you? How have you sensed God’s closeness in those times? What helps you stay centered on the present?
