Many schools already own and use 3D printers and many others are considering getting on. Autodesk Inventor is an ideal tool to create and manipulate models for 3D printing. If you’ve already tried 3D printing something you’ve modelled in Inventor you may have found out that there are quite a few things to consider when creating the model to ensure it prints the way you want it to, or prints at all!

COURSE CONTENT

This course is all about the many things that you should take into account when creating 3D models for printing. There are lots of things to consider: the orientation of the model, wall thicknesses, minimum feature dimensions, overhangs, supports, ways to use fixtures, tolerances, amount of plastic to be used, settings to use when exporting... Taking all these things into consideration you will learn to model parts that will print successfully and troubleshoot potential issues.

Orientation which way is up?

Overhangs why they are an issue, ways of minimising, print orientation, support

3D Print Settings wall thickness, slope, adhesion, strength, infill, layer heights… how all these relate to Inventor modelling

The Autodesk Inventor tools and settings that are most useful and relevant to 3D printing will be covered. Sample 3D prints will be used to highlight the issues and features covered. Ideas for ‘realistic’ classroom 3D printing activities will be discussed and exemplified.

Modelling Techniques and Tools what will work well and what won’t

Model Analysis wall thickness, mass,

Multi-Part Prints techniques for making them, joints and fixtures

Exporting and Analysing STL export settings, slicing and other useful software titles
