Caveats & Paradoxes: • “The Mehrabian Myth” – Study on communication in the early 1970s that has been misinterpreted in many ways that has promoted inaccurately the fact that certain aspects of communication represent a certain percentage of the meaning of any communicated message. In a very limited contextual study Mehrabian’s research reported these figures:
o Body Language = 55% o Tone = 38% o Words = 7% The challenge with this model is that although body language & tone are vitally important to the meaning of communicated message, words are grossly unreported. If these percentages were accurate, then we could watch a foreign language movie without subtitles and understand 93% of the dialogue. The importance of that research though is simply to understand that these three components are always in play and we must be diligent at applying them to ensure that all three components are congruent for the message we are trying to convey.

I’m not sure what the correct allocation of the meaning percentage to apply to each of the three components as it depends on the context, the environment, and the audience. My amateur opinion is that it is at most 33% across the board balanced for all three, yet I also believe that words are very powerful and can far outweigh tone and body language in any message being delivered.
I wonder if those who were the brunt of teasing and bullying as a child and who uttered the phrase “sticks and stones can break my bones but names can never hurt me” still believe it as adults and can truly admit they aren’t still impacted by some hurtful messages many years ago.
