Criminals break out, beat Cibola October 20, 2007 12:35 AM BY DERRIK MILLER, SUN STAFF WRITER

Yuma High players and coaches stuck together during a trying seven weeks. Perhaps the struggle made the reward that much sweeter. Criminals' quarterback Brock Jacobo hit tight end Sam Morrill with an 8-yard scoring strike with slightly more than a minute left in the game to lift Yuma to a 14-10 victory over reigning city champ Cibola on Friday at Doan Field. The Criminals scored 14 unanswered points in the final 13 minutes of the game to notch the first win of the Michael Chadwick Era. "We knew we were up against very strong teams the first seven games. Defeat never set in for this club," Chadwick said. "We knew we were a better football team than the record indicated, and tonight we showed, at least on this night, that we put it together." Faced with a 10-7 fourth-quarter deficit with the ball on the Criminals 38, Jacobo, who fumbled inside the Raiders 5-yard line on Yuma's (1-7, 1-0 5A Gila Valley) previous possession, bounced back to lead a 12-play game-winning drive in which he completed five of six pass attempts. On second down from the Cibola 8, he rolled out toward the sideline, drawing the Raiders (4-4, 0-1 5A Gila Valley) defense, and found Morrill uncovered. Jacobo accounted for both Yuma touchdowns. He completed 14 of 27 pass attempts for 176 yards, and rushed for 58 yards and a goal line dive.

"I had to thank my defense. I fumbled in the corner, but they got me the ball back and let me lead the game-winning drive with my boy Sam Morrill," Jacobo said. "We've been looking for that connection all year. Those first seven games were well worth it." Morrill hauled in four receptions for 76 yards, including an acrobatic 33-yard catch in double-coverage during the second quarter. It was Morrill's first significant action as a pass-catcher this season.

"We haven't really been able to utilize the tight end because we didn't match up well against the Phoenix schools," Morrill said. "Hopefully now, the rest of the region we're good to go." It was a game full of strong defensive efforts by both teams. There was only one total first down in the first quarter, and the Criminals only reached Cibola territory once in the first half. The only points of the first half came with 15 seconds to play when Cibola kicker Marco Landa booted through a 33-yard field goal. The Raiders went up 10-0 on an 11-yard touchdown run by Brandon Hall with 4:43 to play in the third quarter. Hall, playing in his first game in three weeks because of a minor knee injury, ran for 150 yards on 23 carries. But the Yuma defense managed to keep Cibola within striking distance. The Criminals only allowed one first down the rest of the way. John McCormick had a sack and an interception for Yuma. "They executed some plays in some key situations and I gotta give credit to them. They did a good job," Cibola coach Lucky Arvizo said of Yuma.

"(Games) against these inter-city schools are always tough. It was a hard-fought battle and we just have to keep our heads up and move on."
