The Amazing Skinny Fruit

When looking at 5A Gila Valley Region favorites, most of the preseason chatter centered around Kofa and Cibola. Yuma High might have felt overlooked, but now the Criminals just forced their way into the conversation. With the score tied 61-all, Criminals' forward Steven Rojano was fouled coming down with a defensive rebound with five ticks left and Cibola in the bonus. The junior stepped up to the foul line and hit 1 of 2 to lift Yuma to a 62-61 victory over Cibola on Friday at the Palace on Prison Hill. It was Rojano's only point of the game to go along with eight rebounds. "He missed a couple put-backs (in the fourth quarter)," Yuma coach Louie Pisano said of Rojano. "He had an opportunity to put a couple in on the offensive boards but he missed them, so that's why it was nice that he would hit that shot for a little redemption." Yuma point guard Spencer Koepp scored a game-high 24 points, while Cibola's Zac Downing paced the Raiders with 23 and nine rebounds. Yuma guard Ricardo Quintero drained a 3-pointer to put the Crims up by two with 1:30 left, but Cibola forward Jeff Aldama answered with a strong drive and layin off the glass. Raiders' point guard Andrew Aldama came away with a big steal with 35 seconds left to set up a potential game-winning shot for Cibola. Andrew Aldama saw an opening and got in the lane, hoisting up a high-arching shot that didn't go down. Rojano came down with the rebound and got the whistle at the same time. Two of the Raiders three region games have been one-point losses at the last second -- the other being to Kofa on Jan. 11. "It's very frustrating," Cibola coach Gary Abercrombie said. "We just didn't manage the clock well; we shot too soon.

"We know everyone's going to give us their best shot. This might have been Yuma High's best game all year, but that's what you're supposed to do in these games." The Criminals opened up a 44-35 lead with 1:41 to play in the third quarter, but Cibola went on a 13-3 run and took the lead at the 6:35 mark of the fourth quarter when Downing pulled down a rebound and threw a length-ofthe-court outlet pass to a streaking Pat Caswell for a transition bucket. The lead changed hands seven times in the final six minutes. Downing and Koepp traded big baskets throughout the wild finish. Downing buried a go-ahead 3 with 5:15 left, while Koepp brought the Criminals back from four points in the final 2:30. He hit a 3-pointer of his own, and then knocked down a pull-up jumper in transition on Yuma's next possession to give his team a 58-57 edge. "I think this opens up everyone's eyes in the region, because we were never even close with Cibola and Kofa," Koepp said. "This win was really big. We're right in the middle now of the region and I think everyone's surprised where we're at." high 12 boards. Andrew Aldama scored 14 points for the Raiders, while Garrett Firestone contributed seven points and four rebounds off the bench. "Nobody's giving us much of a chance this year," Pisano said. "I just said if we hung tough and played hard anything could happen, and it did. Anything did happen out there tonight and we were just fortunate to be on the positive end of it."
