Crop Progress Report September 15, 2014 – Dennis Bischer Sugarbeets - Early harvest has begun and reported yields have been very good. The adequate moisture and good conditions throughout the growing season allowed the crop to recover from the late planting. Soybeans - Many soybean fields have significant yield reductions due to white mold. Fields that were sprayed with Cobra are handling the mold better than those that were not sprayed. Dry Beans - A few fields have been harvested with some excellent yields being reported. There have also been fields with disappointing yields due to high levels of white mold infection. I expect many fields to be desiccated this week and next. Corn - From May 26th until now we are 35 GDUs behind average. Generally this would not be a concern, but due to late planting we lost out on 196 GDUs between May 1st and May 26th. Wheat - If weather allows, we should see the first fields of wheat planted this week. The fly free date is September 13th, but we do not need to be concerned with the Hessian fly in our area. I would encourage you to plant wheat as soon as field conditions allow. Early planted wheat generally has the highest yield potential. Alfalfa - If you have not made a second application of fertilizer to your alfalfa crop, I would encourage you to do so soon. This will allow for more regrowth this fall and will make the plant healthier as it heads into winter dormancy.
