Submitting Your Scout Photos to the local media. Photos are one of your BEST RECRUITING tools! Just send an e-mail to the local paper with: 1. Your photo or photos (many local papers will print all the photos you send); 2. The caption EXACTLY as you want it to read; and 3. Your contact info (name, phone, e-mail) so they can contact you if there are any questions. The paper will create a “headline”, borders and take care of formatting. Don’t worry about any of that.
The newspaper “5 Ws”: Who, What, Where, When & Why. Who - Identify Your Pack specifically? (“Cub Scout Pack 24, Wallingford) What they are doing (hiking, camping, service project, visit), When-give a date(s); Where -Boy Scout camp, local school or park Why- earn a badge, practice skills, have fun, help, learn.
Use the same info to post to Facebook, Twitter & Instagram and email to District & Council.
Do NOT use the boys’ names for privacy/security reasons. For town specific papers include either in the caption or in your email why your photo is related and relevant to that town/paper. E.g. the boys/Pack are from that town or the event happened in town. Photos: Use Action, Happy, Excited, Fun photos. Catch them in the middle of doing something. Close ups. Informals. Avoid stiff lines of boys or backs of people. Crop the photos to get rid of any excess background-we want the focus to be on the boys not the scenery.
Stage Photos are o.k. (Boys move a lot and are tough to capture in photos.) E.G. Show boys hanging food bags on mailboxes or carrying bags of food to the car-even if it is your mailbox and your car! This is an ad for your Pack. Treat it like you’re telling a new family why they should join your Pack. How Scouting is fun, and promotes community service, confidence and leadership. Include a way for people to contact you: Use your pack’s email (create one if you need to) and ALWAYS include the tag line: “To find out more about Cub Scouts and to find a Pack near you go to “BeAScout.org” (Photos are a recruiting tool for all of us-we want people to be able to find us!)
