English This half term in English, Year One will be learning how to: Read, share and write Contemporary Fiction: using the key text Man on the Moon by Simon Bartram. Learning about the moon and setting, creating aliens and describing characters. The children will be learning how to write and answer questions. As well as writing their own moon based stories. Read, write and perform free verse, encouraging the children to use actions and expression to bring their performances to life. Ensuring the children use correct letter formation and punctuate their writing using capital letters, question marks, finger spaces and full stops in the correct places.
Maths This half term in Maths, Year One will be learning how to: Money: using 1p to £2 coins and beyond, sorting money into groups e.g. value, colour, size etc. Paying for amounts with money by adding coins and giving change. Digits: understanding the value of a digit, breaking down 2 and 3 digit numbers into hundreds, tens and units/ones. Beginning to understand and solve problems involving multiplication and division through sharing and grouping. Solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, including missing number problems such as 6+ __ =13, 14 - __ = 8, 12 - __ = 3
Other Areas of the Curriculum we will be learning about are: Science – Everyday Materials: Sorting materials into groups e.g. use and quality etc. Learning the names and properties of a range of materials and conducting investigations to test materials. Topic – Important People from the Past (History and Geography). The children will be learning about significant people within history; discovering why they are important, where they are from and what can we learn from them. SMSC – learning about respect and kindness; learning what respect is and why and how we can respect others.
What you can do at home to support your child: Reading – it is important that you read with your child every day and fill in their Reading Record with a comment. Handwriting – please support your child to practise forming their letters and numbers correctly to correct the direction and orientation. Spellings – please support your child in learning words on their reading and spelling lists (attached to the front of their Reading Records). Home learning – There will be a pool of activities that you can choose to complete in any order this half term. This will be posted on the Class Page on the school website and will displayed on our class display area (on B1’s window). Please support and encourage your child to complete their home learning activities THEY ARE FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY! If you have any problems, please don’t hesitate to ask the class staff. PE – ensure your child has their full school PE kit in school every day, especially on the days they have their PE lesson or after school sports club.
