Department of Environmental Services Division of Transportation
Custis Trail Improvement Safety Improvements, Arlington County Arlington County Department of Environmental Services and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are developing design and construction plans for safety improvements along the Custis Trail. The Arlington County Shared Use Trail Study, completed in 2010, identified several highly used trail intersections in need of safety improvements. This project will implement the recommendations at three intersections along the Custis Trail including trail crossings at N. Scott Street, N. Quinn Street, and the western side of N. Oak Street. (The eastern side of the N. Oak Street intersection will be addressed separately with the Lynn Street Esplanade Improvements project). The proposed safety improvements will provide new curb and gutter, reconfiguration of right-only lanes at Lee Highway(U. S. Route 29) and N. Quinn and N. Scott Streets, trail widening, curb extensions, ADA-compliant curb ramps, high-visibility crosswalks, and bus stop improvements. The Arlington County Bicycle Advisory Committee and the North Highlands Civic Association were notified of this project in July 2014. A Programmatic Categorical Exclusion was prepared for the project in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and CFR 771.
