Water soluble basting glue was used to hold stems for stitching.

One 14 1/2” x 15 1/2” square for backing.

Construction Cherry Blocks - Make one from each fabric 1. Use the 5” solid red and polka dot squares and the 1 1/2” white squares. 2. On the wrong side of the white squares, draw a diagonal line. 3. Right sides together, place a white square on one corner of the 5” square. 4. Stitch along this line. I stitch slightly inside the line to allow for the turn of the cloth. Repeat for the other three corners. 5. Trim the corner leaving a 1/4” seam allowance. 6. Press. Block will measure 5”.
Stem Blocks - Make 2 1. Use the 2 1/2” x 5” white rectangles and the brown rick rack. 2. Cut the rick rack into two 4” lengths. 3. Take one of the white rectangles and one rick rack strip. On the 5” side of the rectangle measure in 2 1/2”. Draw a diagonal line from the 2 1/2” mark to the upper right corner. Place a small amount of glue on this line and glue one piece of rick rack to it. Stitch in place. Repeat for the other stem block but draw the line from the 2 1/2” mark to the upper left corner. 4. Sew these two blocks together along the 2 1/2” side.
Leaf Blocks - Make 2 1. Use the 2” x 3 1/2” white rectangles, the 2” green squares and the 3” x 6” white and green rectangles. 2. Use the 3” x 6” white and green rectangles and the triangle papers to make four 1 1/2” finished half square triangles.

Leaf Blocks Continued 3. Take one green 2” square and place right sides together with one green/white half square triangle, note orientation from diagram. 4. Stitch, press seam towards square. Repeat for remaining blocks. Block will measure 2” x 3 1/2”. 5. Place units together as shown in photo and stitch. Press. Block will measure 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”. 6. Place one 2” x 3 1/2” white rectangle right sides together with unit just sewn, aligning the 3 1/2” edges and noting placement from photo. Stitch and press. Block will measure 3 1/2” x 5”. 7. Sew two units together along the 3 1/2” sides noting leaf orientation.

Cherry Block Assembly - Make 2 1. Use the completed cherry, stem and leaf blocks. 2. Sew one solid red and one polka dot cherry block together, press seam. 3. Sew the stem block to this unit. 4. Sew the leaf block to this unit. Block will measure 9 1/2” x 10”. 5. Sew one 1 1/2” x 10” strip to each side of the cherry unit, press. 6. Sew one 1 1/2” x 11 1/2” strip to the top and bottom of this unit, press. Block will measure 11 1/2” x 12”. Outer Border 1. Use triangle papers and the 6” x 9” red cherry and white fabric rectangles to make twelve 1 1/2” finished half square triangles. 2. Sew a half square triangle to each end of the four red cherry fabric strips (note orientation on photo). Press. 3. Sew one of these strips to the bottom and top of the square. 4. Sew a half square triangle to each end of the remaining two strips and sew one of these strips to the sides of the square.

Finishing 1. Place the 17” square of batting on the table. 2. Place the 14 1/2” x 15 1/2” backing piece right side up on top of the batting. 3. Place the completed cherry square top on top of the backing fabric, wrong side up. 4. Stitch through all three layers leaving a 3” opening along one side for turning. 5. Turn right side out through opening. Press. 6. Turn in seam allowances in opening and press. Slip stitch opening closed. 7. Top stitch through all layers 1/4” from the edge. Quilt as desired. 8. Make two small sleeves 1” x 3” finished and stitch to the back of the hanging 1/4 “ down from the top and centered. Hand stitch in place leaving about 1/2” between the sleeves so you can slide the hanging rod through them.
