Students rode it north to Davis High School in Kaysville and people from both north and south took the clanging cars to Lagoon Amusement Park, also developed by Bamberger in 1896. The resort is today the largest of its kind in the state. The rail line disappeared in the early 1960s, but a modern day equivalent is now under construction. The FrontRunner, a commuter rail system, will join the convergence of I-15, U.S. 89 and the Legacy Highway in conveying travelers through the area. In association with the planned commuter rail stop, a massive multiuse, transportation oriented development, Station Park, is being mapped out. A joint venture of the Haws Companies and new partner CenterCal Properties, LLC, backers and city officials alike hope it will become the heart of Farmington’s future commercial community. Yet the city also struggles to ensure development not come at the cost of its small town atmosphere and remaining vestiges of its pioneer past. Trails, parks and other efforts to preserve open space are under way. The Historic Preservation Commission is ably led and very active. Over the nearly 160 years of its existence, Farmington has battled raging floods and fires, marauding grasshoppers and howling east winds. Though they may debate fiercely on how best to do it, today’s residents are confident they’ll win the fight to preserve its history as well.
