When I was growing up as a child, my family lived 2 blocks from the children’s home. I grew up going to school and playing baseball with a lot of the kids from the home. One of those kids became a good friend of mine, his name was Johnny Johnson. Johnny was a rough and tough kid full of bitterness, anger, and unforgiveness. When he was 5 or 6 years old, one of the counselors in the home told him about how he became an orphan. He was told that his mother abandoned him immediately following birth with umbilical cord still attached at the doorstep of the orphanage. Johnny’s life from that day on was driven by anger and unforgiveness. When Johnny turned 21, his uncle came to town to visit him, and through a conversation with him, the truth came out regarding Johnny’s mother. Johnny learned that his mother was a young, single, poverty-stricken, pregnant mother when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given a short time to live. She loved the child she was carrying and knew that she had a relative working at this particular orphanage. She planned that, as soon as she gave birth, she would leave the baby there, rather than having the child and becoming attached to it. She wanted to avoid dying while caring for the baby and not know what would happen or if he would be properly taken care of. The truth was that Johnny’s mother did love him and did the best she could for his future. When Johnny learned the truth, his life changed from that moment! He thought all of those years that his mother didn’t care about him and unlovingly abandoned him. The truth was, she loved him more than he would ever know. So the lesson learned is that it is not just what happens, but it is why. I challenge you to ask God, to let you see people the way that He sees people, I dare you! If you do, with a sincere heart, you will never be the same. The bible says in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” That is the power behind what He did! Love is the power. He never said, “by how you dress, they’ll know you are my disciples.” He never said, “by how you prophecy, they’ll know that you are my disciples.” It is why we do what we do. Love like He loved you! Love until it hurts! Love until it makes you vulnerable. You will never find your life until you find your cross!
