Basic Supplies: • glue stick (1) • double sided tape (¼“ or 5 mm) (2) • thin cardboard • masking tape (3) • metal edge ruler (6), 12 in or 25 cm minimum length • cutting mat • knife and blades (X-Acto with #11 blades or Olfa, etc.) (7,8) • scissors (9) • sewing machine with matching bobbins • zipper foot • hand-sewing needle

When working with leather: • binder clips (4) • lighter (when using bonded nylon thread) (5) • leather machine needles • teflon presser foot Optional: • pattern awl (10) • cording or piping foot • 1/8“ or 3 mm edge foot • roller foot (as a replacement for the Teflon foot)

Sewing supplies are available at sewing notions, trimming or fabric stores. Glue, tapes, knifes, cardboard and rulers are available at office supplies, stationary or design stores. All items can also be ordered online.

BACKPACK: CUTTING, SEWING & ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS

B2 DIY bias tape (if applicable) Cut strips of fabric with a width of 4cm (1-3/4in) each with the following lengths. 2 x 100cm & 2 x 38cm (2 x 39-1/2in & 2 x 15in). Fold and press the strips lengthwise in half. Fold and press the remaining halfs lengthwise in half again (see illustration).

C1 backpack flap Attach the shorter piece of piping to the flap: Use double-stick tape to place the piping on the front flap (good side of fabric facing the B2 piping). The finished sides of the piping should face inwards towards the center of the flap. The edges of the piping should be placed exactly on the edges of the flap. Corners: cut perpendicularily into the piping areas where the piping bends around a corner (see illustration).

C2 The piping should disappear along the sides of the flap (see illustration). Leave the top seam open for now. C3 Sew the flap back to the flap front with piping. Attach the leather front top closure with holes to the flap (see illustration). Turn the flap to be on the right side. D1 grommets Attach the grommets according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

D2 leather details Attach the strap or tab and sew the leather front closure bottom to the front side of the backpack (see illustration).
