Do you know Jesus?

FLOWERING OF THE CROSS In addition to the Easter lilies* in our sanctuary this glorious Easter morning, we will also celebrate with the Flowering of the Cross, a joyful addition to our service! Children of all ages are invited to participate. They may bring their fresh flowers and meet in the fellowship hall at 10:10 a.m. this morning to proceed into the sanctuary. (If you did not bring flowers, you may still participate. Some flowers will be provided.) Parents or siblings are asked to walk with small children needing assistance as they file down the left aisle to the cross at the front of the church to place their bundles into the wire frame covering the cross.

WELCOME

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH WASHINGTON, NC

“He is Risen! Are you?”

I

n a recent issue of my former congregation’s monthly newsletter, I found the following words from the pen of my friend and former colleague in ministry:

“It is a fact that many people do not attend church regularly because of a negative experience, real or perceived, they had with the church. Another segment says they don’t attend because they’re against ‘organized religion,’ while others have been put off by the actions of so-called Christians. Sadly, many of these objections are valid.” —André Strydom True enough. Old Andy Ray, as I used to call him, had it right. In many ways he hit the nail on the head! But if it is the poor experience “with” church that seems to be the aggravating factor in the resultant “symptom” of poor church attendance in some, surely the root cause at the core of it is a failure to connect the dots between the Head of the Church—The Risen Lord Jesus—and everything else from the neck down that constitutes “the church,” or “body of Christ” in the world. Ideally, we, the church, ought not to only talk about the Risen Christ but be an active and impressive extension of His person here on earth. The problem may have less to do with how we act as Christians and more to do with the quality (or lack thereof) of our relationship to the One we call our Lord and Master. Fruit, as Jesus was fond of pointing out, doesn’t fall far from the tree or reflect anything but the nature of the tree that produced it. If the tree is not rooted, it ought not to be a surprise that those who eat the fruit that falls from it (Continued, inside back cover)

Admitting Our Faults and Accepting God’s Forgiveness Bev Walker If we claim that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us confess our sins against God. Gracious and Good God, with hearts open we confess that we are not always the people You have called us to be. Under the influence of pride and vanity, we often ignore Your call upon our lives and choose paths of our own making. Nevertheless, You never leave or abandon us. No matter how far we wander, Your love continues always. Forgive us our failings and guide us home again. Remind us that we are Easter people, full of hope and the recipients of Your gift of eternal life, that the lives we live might be a genuine reflection of Your love and our gratitude. In Christ’s name we pray. (Please pause for a moment of silent, personal confession.) *Those who are able, please stand Bold indicates congregational participation

Friends, hear and believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Therefore, in the name of the Risen Christ, let us forgive one another. Amen. *Singing Praises to Our Father in Heaven Glory Be to the Father

gloria patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen.

Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong; they are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me, yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, the Bible tells me so.

O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”

The Lord is my strength and my might; He has become my salvation. There are glad songs of victory in the tents of the righteous: “The right hand of the Lord does valiantly; the right hand of the Lord is exalted; the right hand of the Lord does valiantly.” I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the Lord. Refrain The Lord has punished me severely, but He did not give me over to death. Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank You that You have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Refrain

*We Say What We Believe Apostles’ Creed

Bev Walker

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under

Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Giving Ourselves to God through Our Tithes and Offerings Choral Offering Hallelujah, Amen!

*We Praise God above All Else Because He Lives

resurrection

God sent His Son; they called Him Jesus; He came to love, heal, and forgive; He lived and died to buy my pardon; an empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives. Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow; because He lives, all fear is gone; because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives.

(Continued, “From My Heart to Yours”) may end up getting sick instead of satiated. Somehow this all seems even more important as we gather to celebrate the Risen Lord. If we, who are His body in the world, are not reflective of having been risen, too, then what good are we to Him or anyone else, for that matter? Let us resolve to prove our doubters wrong. Christ is risen and so ought we to rise to the occasion. After all, it is our place to be that living proof is it not? My love always,

Lee (Reprinted from The Washington Daily News)

Please note… The North Carolina Presbyterian Historical Society will hold its Annual Spring Tour on Friday and Saturday, April 10-11, in the beautiful colonial town of Edenton. Many of our colonial and state leaders lived there, as well as the slave and later author, Harriet Jacobs. We will visit historic houses, a restored lighthouse, the colonial courthouse, St. Paul's Episcopal (organized 1701) as well as First Presbyterian, and will learn about colonial religion in an area with few Presbyterians. Please join us for a memorable tour. Registration is only $21. The schedule, registration form, and address are on our website at www.ncphsociety.org, or contact Program Chair Sam Martin at (910) 428-4165. The 1 - 1 - 1 Initiative Thank you for your faithful witness to the power of God to answer prayer!!! Please, continue to pray for FPC, both for our mission and our members! This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. —1 John 5:14 “When faith ceases to pray, it ceases to live.” E. M.
