Dodgeball The following is an abbreviated & modified version of the rules printed in the Official N.A.D.A. Rule Book. Teams Each team may play with a maximum of 6 players. There is no minimum number of players required to start a game. For CoRec, the maximum number of men who can play is 3. A team can play with up to 6 women if they wish. Roster limit is 10. Timing Each match will be best of 3 games. The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner of the game. A 7-minute time limit has been established for each game. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of 7 minutes, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. In the case of an equal number of players remaining after regulation, sudden-death overtime period will be played. Once 1 person is eliminated, a team is declared the winner. 5-SECOND VIOLATION: In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team in the lead controls all six (6) balls on their side of the court for more than 5 seconds. This also applies to tied teams. If an OFFICIAL calls a violation, one player may be removed from the court on team that is holding the balls. Period Breaks: 30 seconds. Teams should swap sides & may change their starting lineup for the next round during this time. Time Out Length: None except in the case of injury. Substitutions Substitutes may enter the game if one of their teammates gets injured and exits the court. Players that are “out” automatically become subs and should exit the playing zone. Players should exit & enter the game through the basketball baseline. No re-entries by the teammate of a catcher are allowed if a LIVE ball is caught. Gameplay Game begins by placing 6 dodge balls along the center line. Players then take a position behind their end line. Following a signal by the official, teams may approach the centerline to retrieve the balls. Once a ball is retrieved it must be taken behind the attack-line before it can be legally thrown. Balls illegally thrown during the opening rush will be dead upon release by the thrower.

Boundaries: Inbounds: The entire half of the basketball court inside the white baseline and from curtain to curtain. Out-of-Bounds: There are NO out of bounds. Court divisions: The court is divided into (2) equal sections by a center-line & attacklines parallel to the center-line. Center line: The taped line running from the baseline under the basket to the circle in the middle of the basketball court. Players may not touch the floor on the opposite side of the center line, but are allowed to “break the plane” or reach across mid-court to grab a ball sitting on the opposite side of the line. Attack lines: The volleyball sidelines. Object of the Game: Eliminate all opposing players by getting them "OUT". This may be done by: i. Team A hitting an opposing player (Team B) with a LIVE thrown ball below the shoulders. Definition of LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the floor or ground, another ball, another player, an official, or an item outside of or bordering the playing surface (wall, ceiling, fence, etc). The ball goes DEAD the moment it touches any person or object. 1. HEAD SHOTS: Players hit in the head will remain in the contest. 2. HEAD SHOTS: If it becomes apparent to officials that a player or team is repeatedly & intentionally landing head shots on opposing players, the offending player or team may be pulled out of the game, disqualified, or suspended. ii. Team A catching a LIVE ball thrown by Team B: the thrower from TEAM B is out. 1. Example 1 (BLOCKING): Team A throws a ball that’s deflected by a ball held by Team B. The thrown ball is dead. 2. Example 2 (BLOCKING): Team A throws a ball that knocks a ball out of the hands of a player on Team B. The thrown ball is dead, and the player that dropped the ball remains in the game. 3. Example 3 (DOUBLE HITS): Team A throws a ball that bounces off of Team B’s Player #1. a. If B’s Player #1 or any other player on Team B then catches the same LIVE ball before it contacts anything else, the thrower on Team A is out.

b. IF B’s Player #2 is struck by the same ball and the ball falls to the floor or becomes dead afterwards, both players that were hit are out. Double Catch: If 2 players catch each other out, both may remain on the court. Use of Feet: Balls may not be kicked at opponents. Kickers will be declared “out”. However, feet may be used to direct a ball to a teammate. Sudden Death If at the end of 7 minutes both teams have equal number of players on the court, we will enter a sudden death. 6 balls will be placed along the center line and all of the players still in will stand behind their end line. On the referee’s signal, the players will rush the center line to obtain the balls. The balls are dead until brought behind their respective attack line. After a ball is considered live, players may go ANYWHERE within the boundaries of the court to attack an opposing player. The first team to get a member of the opposing team out is declared the winner. *Only during sudden death may players cross the center line to attack opponents.
