Rules that have been updated/added from 2016-2017 are highlighted in yellow. Dodgeball will be self-officiated. Any conflicts will be handled by the Intramural Sports staff member on duty who will have absolute control over all final decisions. Teams are responsible for keeping their spectators under control. Misconduct of spectators, players or coaches can result in an ejection or forfeiture of the match.

NUMBER OF PLAYERS Teams will play 4v4. At least three players are required to avoid a forfeit. CO-REC MODIFICATION: Teams will play 4v4 with a minimum of 3 players, but only with any of the following gender combinations:  2 men/2 women  1 man/2 women  2 men/1 woman

Forfeit Policy 

 

A game is considered a forfeit when at least one team fails to have the minimum number to play at FIVE minutes after the scheduled game time. This is a “grace period” that allows teams to not forfeit when just running a tad bit behind, but will give teams who show up on time a small score advantage at the start of the game. If a team does not have the minimum players at game time, but is able to field enough players before five minutes, the game will start with the non-offending team receiving a set number of points/goals (see below). Games will always start at the beginning regardless of number of minutes allowed for a team to field the minimum number of players.

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY Each individual may play for only ONE Open team and ONE Co-Rec team, if applicable.

EQUIPMENT Dress Denim or shorts/pants with metal rivets may not be worn during any Intramural Sports competition. Shoes/Cleats All players must wear shoes. A shoe shall be considered official if it is made of canvas or soft-leather training or tennis/gym shoes with rubber soles. Turf shoes (shoes without a flat bottom) will not be permitted. Vibram FiveFinger shoes will not be allowed. The officials and supervisors on duty have the authority to disallow any shoe that they feel would endanger the person wearing the shoes or his/her opponent. The officials and supervisors on duty have the authority to disallow any shoe that they feel would endanger the person wearing the shoes or his/her opponent. Game Equipment Dodgeballs will be provided by the Intramural Sports program. Illegal Equipment 1

A player shall not wear anything that is construed as dangerous by the official. Examples of this are:  All jewelry (i.e. necklaces, earrings, rings, string bracelets, chains, etc.)  Headgear (i.e. caps, bandannas, clips, etc.) o Exceptions: Yakima, turbans, winter/wool hats with no hard brims, and one-piece head/sweat bands that do not have to be tied and are elastic in nature.  A guard, cast, or brace made of a hard substance, not covered by proper padding at the discretion of the official. First warning of illegal equipment is at the captain’s meeting prior to the first set of games. The official has the authority to remove and/or eject players without warning. Players may wear soft, pliable pads or braces on the leg, knee, and/or ankle. Braces may not have any exposed metal and/or screws. Braces made of any hard material (including plastic) must be covered with a padded sleeve or at least one-half inch padding for safety reasons. Under no circumstances will a player wearing a cast or splint be permitted to play.

PLAYING AREA Games will be played at the Coors Fitness Center Racquetball Courts. The playing area is 20’ wide x 40’ long. The “short line” serves as the center line, as it is 20’ from the front and back walls.

THE GAME The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them OUT. An OUT is scored by:  Hitting an opposing player with a LIVE thrown ball below the shoulders  Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground, wall, or ceiling.  Causing an opponent to drop a held ball as a result of contact by a thrown LIVE ball. (Usually occurs when a ball is being used to block a thrown ball.)  A player touching or crossing any of the boundary lines on the court and touches an area outside of the boundary in an attempt to dodge a ball. Definition: LIVE: A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything except another player or just the ball that is in possession of another player. A ball becomes dead when hitting an official, the ground, wall, ceiling, a ball not in possession of a teammate, players out of the game, spectators, or other object. A dead ball that hits a player or is caught does not result in an OUT. A ball is considered LIVE if the ball is in flight at the time of an official’s signal to end regulation time.

BOUNDARIES During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines (being the short line/half court line). A boundary line itself is considered “out of bounds”. A player dodging a ball and makes contact with or over the boundary line is considered OUT.

BEGINNING THE GAME 2

Each match will begin with a coin toss. The team winning the toss will have its choice of either side of the court. Teams will alternate sides following each game. Game begins by placing the dodgeballs along the center line – two (2) on one side of the center ball and two (2) on the other. Each team is guaranteed 2 balls and the center one is first come, first grab.  If a team chooses to not take either or both of their “guaranteed” balls within 10 seconds, they become first come, first grab.  Contact with the opposing team’s designated 2 balls before the 10 second period will result in a violation and the violating player will be called OUT. Players then take a position behind their end line. Following by a whistle the official, teams may approach the center line to retrieve the balls.  In order for a ball taken from the center line to be made “active”, the player must bring the ball back to their back wall and touch the wall with the ball or any part of their body (when still holding the ball) to make the ball live and eligible to be thrown at another player.

TIMING AND WINNING THE GAME The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. Each game will have a 3-minute time limit with a continuously running clock. If time expires before the completion of the game, the team with the most players remaining will win.  Should there be a tie (same number of players left on both teams), the game will immediately continue. As soon as one player is eliminated, the game is over and the team who eliminated a player from the other team will win. Tournament play may result in points being awarded to teams based on winning/losing: Example – Winning the game before the 3 minutes expires = 3 points Winning in Sudden Death OT = 1 point This will be determined by the tournament director prior to the tournament.

RULES OF THE GAME Once a player is OUT, he/she must immediately stand by their team’s right side of the wall. Players should remember the order that he/she got OUT for re-entry purposes. If a LIVE ball is caught, then one player from the team that caught the ball is allowed to re-enter the game. The player that will be permitted to re-enter the game will be the next player in line in the players’ box. Stalling Rule: If a team has all balls on their side of the court, they will have 7 seconds to release/throw balls to the other side of the court.  Teams in violation of this rule will be penalized a player (currently on the court) of the offending team’s choice.  Teams who attempt to violate the spirit of the rules in any way will be warned. Continued violations of the spirit of the rules will result in the game ending immediately and the win being awarded to the non-offending team. This is the judgement call of the IM Staff and cannot be protested. Substitutions will only be allowed during the period between games.

CODE OF CONDUCT Players are expected to be honest and take themselves out when the time comes. Winning a game due to cheating is not sportsmanlike and will look poorly on you and your team. All decisions by the IM Staff are final. Players who show unsportsmanlike conduct are subject to being ejected from ALL Intramural Sports indefinitely. The ejected player must leave the facility. The ejected player is automatically suspended indefinitely from ALL intramural sports until the ejected player schedules a meeting and meets with the Student Programs Manager. Should poor sportsmanship occur at any point during the tournament, the Student Programs Manager or Intramural Supervisors/Interns reserve the right to disqualify a team from the tournament.
