Compare ablation and coagulation performance of the ® DePuy Synthes Mitek Sports Medicine VAPR ARCTIC ® Suction Electrode (Dome) against the Smith & Nephew ® ® ® Dyonics Eflex Ablator Probe.
The VAPR ARCTIC Suction Electrode outperforms the Dyonics Eflex Ablator Probe in both ablation rate and area of thermal margin.††
Discussion & Conclusion: Materials and Methods: The VAPR ARCTIC Suction Electrode (225029) and the Dyonics Eflex Ablator Probe (72200683) are both articulating radiofrequency (RF) electrodes. The VAPR ARCTIC Suction Electrode is a bipolar suction electrode, while the Dyonics Eflex Ablator Probe is a monopolar electrode without integrated suction. Both devices are used at their manufacture’s default power settings. Two types of animal tissue were used to evaluate the performance of the electrodes. Bovine ligament tissue was used to measure ablation, or tissue removal rates. Ligaments were weighed before and after ablation to determine the amount of tissue removed. The ablation sample size was 15 repetitions for each electrode. Porcine kidney was used to measure coagulation efficiency by area of the thermal margin of a lesion. Lesions were produced by each electrode on the same sample tissue and cross sectional areas were measured via light microscope. The ratio of the areas was used to remove effects of tissue variation. The sample size for coagulation test was 20 repetitions for each electrode.†
The VAPR ARCTIC Suction Electrode displays improved ablation and coagulation performance over the alternative, articulating Dyonics Eflex Ablator Probe, while also providing suction and bipolar operation.
