Don’t gamble with your life at level crossings Last year there were 472 near misses at Queensland Rail level crossings. The difference between a near miss and a fatality can be a fraction of a second. In some cases it is only luck that has saved a life. Please stay aware at level crossings, and follow all signs and signals.
Level crossing facts • There are 1392 public level crossings on the Queensland Rail network. All have some form of protection including boom gates, flashing lights or signage. • An unloaded 6-car train weighs 254 tonnes. A freight train can weigh up to 10,000 tonnes.
Whether you are new to a road or know it like the back of your hand, if you don’t stay alert at level crossings the consequences can be devastating. Don’t gamble with your life. Please follow these simple rules to protect you, your family and others at level crossings: 1. Pay attention to signs and signals.
• A train moving at 60 or 80 km/h can take kilometres to stop. During wet weather stopping distances increase notably.
2. Never enter a level crossing if the red lights are flashing or the boom gates are down.
• Train drivers can’t swerve, so if there’s a collision, the car, truck or pedestrian will come off second best.
4. Always look out for the second train.
• Queensland Rail urges motorists and pedestrians to simply follow the rules and obey the signs and signals at level crossings.
3. Never queue across train tracks. 5. Remember that some level crossings don’t have lights or boom gates. At these crossings, always follow the traffic signs and signals before driving on.
