Did you know that gambling or sports wagering can cause a student-athlete to forfeit a season of their eligibility? NCAA March Madness consistently ranks at the top of tournaments or games wagered on. The Compliance Department would like to remind all student-athletes that with March Madness approaching the only participation student-athletes may have with bracket prediction is for bragging rights only. At the beginning of each academic year all student-athletes sign a statement that affirms that you are aware of NCAA regulations regarding gambling activities. Failure to comply with this agreement could jeopardize your eligibility.

NCAA sees Positive Changes in the Banned Substance List, but negative trends of the Student Athletes
Go0d news came up during the NCAA convention including the banned substance list’s effectiveness. The NCAA conducted a study and found that 96% of its student-athletes have never used any type of narcotics or steroids, an increase from 95% in the 2009 survey. Although it may seem small, the substance banned list will be a gradual effect, and that 1% roughly accounts for 205 more students who have decided against the effects of steroids, cocaine, and other narcotics. Although the use of steroids and narcotics is down significantly, binge drinking and social drug use is on the rise. Since 2005 , there has been a steady increase in the amount of binge drinking and marijuana use among student-athletes. Although there have been great strides in narcotics and steroid use, the battle against binge drinking and marijuana use still continues to rage on with no progress. Please be aware of the symptoms of binge drinking and marijuana usage. If you think someone from your team is abusing alcohol, please seek help for them, for their own safety.
