SAFETY: A TIGHTROPE WALK AT 7 °C. Accept no compromises when it comes to safety. When temperature drops below 7 °C, summer tyres no longer perform at their best as rubber compounds get hard at low temperatures. On wet and snow-covered roads in particular, such conditions have a negative impact on adhesion, steering, and handling. Winter tyres, in contrast, are made with special rubber compounds formulated to withstand the cold in order to maintain grip at low temperatures.

Since 2012, the EU tyre label has provided information about three tyre quality criteria: Fuel efficiency, wet grip and external noise emission – criteria which you will also find throughout this brochure. These indicators are intended to help consumers choose an adequate type of tyres. However, these indicators are only of limited relevance for winter tyres since they do not take into account road conditions and temperatures during winter.

A SAFETY SYSTEM THAT COPES WITH THE PRESSURE. How the tyre pressure control system works: A tyre pressure control system sensor is installed at the tyre valve on each of the four wheels. These monitor the air pressure in each individual tyre. If the pressure drops below a critical value (20% below the nominal pressure or below the defined minimum pressure of 1.7 bar), the control display in the vehicle informs you of this deficit so that you can take suitable action.

THE SAFE WAY TO THE SUMMIT. The snow chains are fitted to the tyres on the drive axle. On BMW xDrive models, the snow chains may only be fitted to the rear tyres. For further information, please refer to the operating instructions. It’s a good idea to practise mounting the chains at home. This way things will go faster when you really need them. Once the chains have been mounted, you should check the proper attachment after 200 to 300 m and tighten them if necessary. Tip: When driving with snow chains, be aware of the very different grip at the two axles: If the chains are fixed at the rear then it is particularly important to take care on bends since the front wheels – which are not fitted with chains – do not transfer the steering force to the road surface as much as they usually do. Maximum recommend speed for driving with snow chains is 30 mph.

A SAFETY SYSTEM THAT COPES WITH THE PRESSURE. How the tyre pressure control system works: A tyre pressure control system sensor is installed at the tyre valve on each of the four wheels. These monitor the air pressure in each individual tyre. If the pressure drops below a critical value (20% below the nominal pressure or below the defined minimum pressure of 1.7 bar), the control display in the vehicle informs you of this deficit so that you can take suitable action.

THE SAFE WAY TO THE SUMMIT. The snow chains are fitted to the tyres on the drive axle. On BMW xDrive models, the snow chains may only be fitted to the rear tyres. For further information, please refer to the operating instructions. It’s a good idea to practise mounting the chains at home. This way things will go faster when you really need them. Once the chains have been mounted, you should check the proper attachment after 200 to 300 m and tighten them if necessary. Tip: When driving with snow chains, be aware of the very different grip at the two axles: If the chains are fixed at the rear then it is particularly important to take care on bends since the front wheels – which are not fitted with chains – do not transfer the steering force to the road surface as much as they usually do. Maximum recommend speed for driving with snow chains is 30 mph.
